No Space for a Full Desk? Build an easy Shelf Desk!

Using a wood plank and some heavy duty brackets, I installed a cute little writing space in my spare bedroom. It's tucked out of the way and gives a great space for guests to use their laptops or chargers. Super space for kids to do homework on as well.

given the width of that desk I'm pretty sure there are some more studs back along the wall that more "brackets" could be tied too. It is nice not to have a leg going to the floor for that exposed corner.

There is one stud adjacent to the outlet that you can see by the chair. I could attach another bracket there, but it would be 12 inches from the bracket on the outer edge which throws off the aesthetics considerably. Given the purpose, the size and the location of this "desk", I think the heavy duty anchors should suffice. If I had small children, it would be a different case!

A long "cleat" ( a 2" by 2" board) could be installed along the back wall. This would provide support along the entire length, but be virtually invisible from the front or sides.

This trick is used for " torsion box shelves" where no supports are visible.

I love this idea! I haven't checked out the blog, but for the space I have in mind it would be great if the shelf desk could be in an up or down position.

Karen N...in those cases a "piano hinge" is a great way to secure the back edge.
