Headed for the dumpster - gasp!

Miriam Illions
by Miriam Illions
I must admit, one year ago I would have walked right past this without batting an eyelash. After seeing the amazing projects you all do, this looks like a treasure sitting among trash bags. I just wish I had a truck. I'm going to talk to the Hometalk development team about building in a furniture alert system for spotting discarded furniture :) That way you can subscribe to be on the list and receive an alert when junk is spotted in your area. LOL.

When I posted the photo of my porch repainting project, the bright orange rocker was rescued from the garbage. I received a lot of questions on how it was painted. Wouldn't it be lovely to have a shed type place where people could drop off old furniture to be refurbished and then donated to people who lose their things in storms, fire, etc. There are so many talented people who could do so much good.
  • Bernice H Bernice H on May 25, 2012
Soooooo, did you get it? Didnt you find any hunks around who would have carried it a few miles for you? Maybe you need to carry a blanket, and bungee cords for those unexpected treasure finds. Then tie it to the roof of your car! And dont pay any attention to anyone looking at you , like "dumpster diver lady".

They have a "curb alert" on Craigslist here in my area. When someone puts stuff at the curb, they put an alert on the list. I've gotten some good "old" stuff that way, and its free!
  • Audrey Z Audrey Z on May 25, 2012
I would not have passed that one up.
  • Miriam Illions Miriam Illions on May 25, 2012
@Jeanette -that WOULD be lovely. You know, there is a non profit in Atlanta call Furniture Bank of Atlanta. I think that's pretty much what they do. @Bernice- no hunks in sight and no car. This was in NYC and I was walking to the subway. @Jan - that is AWESOME. That's what I'm talking about! We need a curb alert on Hometalk. @Audrey - It was painful :)
  • Alaine M Alaine M on May 25, 2012
I would so jump on that! perfect as a bench or under a long window as planter or even a console behind the sofa. a little sanding, some stain or paint...or take it apart and use the wood for shelves or ?
  • Susan S Susan S on May 25, 2012
Aaaaammm - Miriam's gettin the RE-DO BUG!!! What a fabulous find - you should've taken it. Somebody in your area who is on HT would definitely have taken it off your hands. What a fantastic idea - a spotter alert!! So, a year later your eye has been trained through exposure to fabulous ideas and now you see things with a totally different perspective!! Congratulations, YOU ARE GROWING!!! lol
  • Miriam Illions Miriam Illions on May 26, 2012
I'm in NYC - if it was in Atlanta, I would have called Sheila :) Susan you are right! I'm really seeing things differently these days. I'm so happy :)
  • Tammy@Deja Vue Designs Tammy@Deja Vue Designs on May 26, 2012
That whole furniture alert system would be AWESOME!!!! Nothing like a curb check!!!!
  • Susan S Susan S on May 26, 2012
@Miriam: Are you being a "tourist" in NYC??? @Everyone above: What a lost opportunity huh?? Oh well, maybe next time. This poor piece of tossed out furniture will never have it's destiny fulfilled - it will never know what it's full potential could have been . . . . .
  • Susan S Susan S on May 26, 2012
OH NO!!!! The horror of it all!! May it RIP!!!!
  • Miriam Illions Miriam Illions on May 26, 2012
@Susan- Hometalk headquarters is in NYC, I'm splitting my time between here and Atlanta right now. I'm being a tourist now too, though :)
  • Sherrie S Sherrie S on May 26, 2012
I appreciate Miram I's thoughts, ideas. It is time to recycle. Many people throw away perfectly good things that other people would love. It is time to recycle and be pleased when someone takes YOUR JUNK and loves it.
  • Kelly S Kelly S on May 26, 2012
looks like a perfectly good work bench to me.
  • Miriam Illions Miriam Illions on May 26, 2012
    Well said, Sherrie!
  • Susan S Susan S on May 26, 2012
I had no idea NYC was part of the HT mix!!! So you just kinda float around between Hot Lanta and the Big Apple huh??? Wow, really tough life!!! LOL
  • Miriam Illions Miriam Illions on May 27, 2012
    @Susan :) No complaints here :) LOL.

I just painted this hand me down table that looked just like yours. It now sits behind my sofa. I thought you might like seeing what it looks like in Annie Sloan chalk paint Duck Egg blue. : ) Good find!
  • Susan S Susan S on May 27, 2012
Oh No!! They're actually long lost twins!!! Just HOW ironic is that anyway?? Really Miriam, and to think YOU could have saved it!! I'll bet your don't EVER pass up something on the sidewalk again - no matter where you are!! Or if you do you sure won't tell us about it!!! @Rebecca - that is gorgeous, as is your entire room. The blues punctuated around the room are in perfect balance. I like that the console is not the same identical shade as your window treatments, chairs and the oriental piece at the end of the console. People get so hung up on thinking everything has to matchy match! NOT!!! ; ~ ) But YOU knew that!!
  • Miriam Illions Miriam Illions on May 27, 2012
That looks EXACTLY like the one I saw in the street! Rebecca, yours is gorgeous! Susan - you sure know how to rub it in :) I wish I could have saved it.
  • Susan S Susan S on May 27, 2012
    Awwww. . . . .but you're such a good sport Miriam. You KNOW I love you girl. Just keepin you on your toes. . . . . ; ~ )
  • Janie B Janie B on May 27, 2012
Who would throw this away! Looks like a treasure to me!
  • Miriam Illions Miriam Illions on May 28, 2012
I know, Susan :) Janie -right?!
  • Bernice H Bernice H on May 31, 2012
Hey girls...I am SURE someone saw it and rescued it! there are a lot more people out there like us, who live close to it. Too bad we dont know who it was and what they did. Hopefully they didnt just take it and leave it the way it was! it is ready for a big second life! But a piece that nice, yup, I am sure it got adopted!
  • Susan S Susan S on May 31, 2012
@Sheila & Bernice: HA - I can just see that caption now: HOMELESS CONSOLE RESCUED FROM THE STREETS OF NYC!! Was it "devine intervention" or a case of someone having an extra big heart? Plenty of other people passed by this old worn piece of furniture that fateful morning. It's previous owner no longer saw it as the beauty it once was, before the kids came along. Crayon marks, glass rings, scuff marks and a few gouges marred it's potential. But SOMEBODY saw underneath all the surface scarring and quickly snatched it up to give it a new home and to lovingly restore this Grand Dame!! What WILL she become next?? The Saga of the abandoned console table will be continued - hopefully!!! LOL ;~)
  • Susan S Susan S on May 31, 2012
LOL Ha Ha etc. etc. Thanks Sheila!! You & Bernice planted the neucleus by wondering what may have happened to it and how ironic it would be if someone did rescue it and it ended up back on here. I just took it and ran with it!!! I'm glad you got a chuckle out of it!!! Whatever it takes to keep ourselves entertained right???
  • Bernice H Bernice H on Jun 05, 2012
Yup, wouldnt it be a hoot if it found its way here to Hometalk? I would love to see it all reloved!
  • Miriam Illions Miriam Illions on Jul 10, 2012
Debbiedoo's I wish you were there to rescue it! I know you could show them a thing or two!
  • Karleen A Karleen A on Jul 11, 2012
OMG!!! I would have hauled that away!!!! Truck or no truck!!!I would have dragged that home!!! LOL!!! I think of all the furniture I tossed to the curb over the years, if I only had a site like this back then!!!!
  • Miriam Illions Miriam Illions on Jul 11, 2012
@Karleen, lol. I KNOW! I anticipated gasps of horror for you all, lol. Wish you were there to rescue it!
  • Z Z on Jul 12, 2012
There's no way I would have left that baby behind. It's amazing how much you can get into the trunk of the car if you have bungees on hand to hold down the lid. I once got a tall armoire in mine that the guy I bought from insisted I needed a truck for. I should start a thread to show how much you can get in a car when you want to.
  • Bernice H Bernice H on Jul 12, 2012
Maybe if we all think...table on street, who has it...table on street who has it..maybe we will hear from someone answering our thought waves. Such a nice piece!
  • Jeanette S Jeanette S on Jul 13, 2012
I have been watching this post and it has been a lot of fun! I think this little table sitting so sadly on the street struck a redo chord in all of our hearts. Wouldn't it be fun to see a TV show on one of the home networks with a couple of people who actually drove around and picked up discarded pieces and refurbished them for their original use or either re-used them for a completely different use? They could include segments sent in by viewers of their projects and fantastic finds and redos! I would love this!
  • Z Z on Jul 13, 2012
They used to have a show similar to that called Junk Brothers (I think). They'd pick up two pieces per show and each would remake them into something else and then put them back at the home owners where they found them, ring the bell and run. They drive slow enough once in their vehicle so they could film the home owners reaction. That part was kind of cheesy, but I liked the make overs. It could have been more fun to have heard the home owners reactions to finding what they once put out as junk winding back up in their yard transformed.
  • Miriam Illions Miriam Illions on Jul 13, 2012
Good idea, Jeanette! I'd watch that! Becky, I saw your furniture/car post. Loved it! Ok, so, I passed by the same spot yesteday and you wont BELIEVE what was there this time! I'm scared to post it here though, you guys will literally eat me alive for not taking it, lol.
  • Z Z on Jul 14, 2012
Miriam, if I lived closer I'd have to know that spot. Granted my husband wouldn't want me to know it.....
  • Miriam Illions Miriam Illions on Jul 14, 2012
@Becky, I'm not sure why, but every few weeks I see discarded furniture sitting there.
  • Susan S Susan S on Jul 14, 2012
@Miriam - awww, you make us sound like pirhanas - So can we super-size that and how about some sauce on the side!!! Well, one thing's for sure, YOU definitely see things from a different perspective now!! OK, so go ahead and post your new find - we promise to only take nibbles and no big bites!! LOL
  • Miriam Illions Miriam Illions on Jul 15, 2012
Haha, OK, since you promised not to bite, here it is. Aren't they sweet?! I'm sure someone picked them up and gave them a good home.
  • Susan S Susan S on Jul 15, 2012
WOW - what a find!! You just know somebody snapped those up in a hurry - and a whole lot easier to transport that the HUMONGOUS table!! A little paint and snazzy upholstery . . . . . .ahhhh the possibilities!! ;~) I can't remember the girl's name that reupholsters chairs - I know YOU probably know but I immediately thought of her when I saw these!!
  • Z Z on Jul 15, 2012
I never would have been able to pass those babies up. I have to find out how far my friend in Warren Robin's GA is from you. She owns a used furniture store there called Robin's Nest and she would be grabbing that stuff up real fast!
  • Miriam Illions Miriam Illions on Jul 15, 2012
Susan, you're thinking of Yamini, actually, I'm in NYC right now; this is on Broadway and Eighth, @Becky, know anyone around here?
  • Miriam Illions Miriam Illions on Jul 15, 2012
Sheila, lol. I totally deserve it.
  • Susan S Susan S on Jul 15, 2012
@Miriam - yep, I'm thinking of Yamini - could'nt remember her name!!! @Sheila - your solution is alot easier - stencils of course!! OH WELL . . . .since Miriam did not rescue them I guess we'll never know their true potential .
  • Z Z on Jul 16, 2012
@ Miriam. Just my friend in Warner Robins. She's actually took her hubby to the air port in Atlanta this morning.
  • Miriam Illions Miriam Illions on Jul 16, 2012

If you want to try hooking up with an online group called "FreeCycle". You can find the through Yahoo Groups. The whole concept of the group is to pass on for "free" anything you don't want any more instead of sending it to the landfill. You post what you have or what you are looking for online , and if some one else has it the you pass along the info and location and pick it up for free. I have passed along everything from 1gal ice cream buckets to old computers that I have rebuilt and set up for families that did not have one. I picked up a complete wall unit entertainment center ( German Shrunk type ) that needed some TLC for free.
  • Miriam Illions Miriam Illions on Jul 30, 2012
Thanks, Warren! I've heard of Freecycle, but haven't actually used it yet.
  • Z Z on Jul 30, 2012
I used to use the one in Omaha when we lived there, but it got nasty with posts from people that work during the day griping about never getting anything. I mean I understand the frustration, but that's the way it works. You want rid of something so you give it to the first person that contacts you and comes and gets it. After we moved out here to the country I was close enough to another Freecycle in a much smaller city. Everyone was so friendly. Not saying Omaha, as a city, isn't friendly. It's very friendly. It just seems the more people you have in a group the more chances of some of them getting upset with things. Freecycle is an awesome concept though.
  • Debbie McGarrity Debbie McGarrity on Aug 27, 2015
We have free cycle in UK but we aren't a allow to loft refuge once do sacred by owner it's the city's property!

This is all new to me but I think it is great. I was visiting my son in LA and saw a piece with a "free" sign on it. It killed me to not be able to stop and get it! If anyone sees items in Houston they can not get, feel free to message me.
