I need an ornamental that will thrive in either sun or shade.

One side of my porch gets a lot of evening sun while the other side is mostly in the shade. I would like an ornamental that would work, it could be planted in a pot.
This is the front of home and the plants would be on the end of the porch not by the steps.

Are you looking to plant a tree or a bush?

Have you considered Salvia? Also you could do some Double Knock-out roses. Or Astilbe which flowers and spreads.

Try using Google--just search for plants/shrubs that thrive in sun or shade, an added benefit of doing the is that you can view images of you find. I do this all the time and it is so helpful.

Obviously you would not want any kind of plant that would block your view/your porch. So you need a low to low medium type shrubbery. Do you want a flowering shrub? Do you want an evergreen shrub? Either would work well for your style of home. What zone area are you in?

Amy in Overland Park Kansas suggested double knock out roses - get a color that will make your home pop. Also her suggestion for astilbe is good for shade area - also hosts. You can plant some of the specialty host as that grow very large in a pot and it would be stunning. Do you like grasses? There are many varieties - annual/perennial, different heights and sun/shade requirements. I've potted grasses as focal point of pot and then added trailing ivy, inpatiens or begonia if shade. In sun I would use trailing sweet potato vines (lime green would be a good pop color) and any other sun loving annuals/perennials to fill in. With your toe of home I would stay away from white or pink flowers go more for orange, red, yellows.

Hibiscus. In Pots. Geranium in pots Neither will live through the freeze. In pots you can move them in when cold weather hits. Or cover them so they don't get frost. I am assuming you would like color. Knock Out roses are a deers, tasty delite!

I would suggest clethra, not a bad looking shrub, glossy green leaves, and when in bloom in late spring or early summer, SWEET!

Studying your photo again, I am giving you my sincere input. Trim your existing plants to be more uniform with each other. Move the chairs from in front of shutters to one left of shutter and other to right of shutter. Then adjust the other four chairs to exact symmetrical. Put the tall plants by the door on each outside of left and far right chairs. Now buy a couple pots matching existing and plant bright red geraniums for each side of door entrance. You could hang Boston ferns in between to far left and right of outside columns, not to block the lovely shutters. I would go ahead and put 2 more Bostons on each end of porch. Beautiful home. Symetrics and a splash of color will make your home stand out!

You've received lots of good ideas, however be careful you don't add too much maintenance to what you already have. The larger variegated hosta would be good because they multiply every year. You can either leave them alone or split them up for other areas in your flower beds. Happy gardening!!

We had the steps rebuilt and will put wrought iron handrails, will probably remove the sasanqua so by the steps and replace or remove the shrubs on the corner of the porch.
