Our Chicken coop

This City girl has chickens.

I decided I wanted chickens about 4 years ago. So the hubby built this for me. He even built the bird house next to it. I think he did a great job

Recently Orlando,Fl passed legislation allowing some people to have chickens. Good move, put some country in the city. Joan A, especially nice if those people build something as cute as your chicken four star hotel.

Actually its a three star. When the door is open I painted 3 stars on the inside of the door. 2 big red ones with a big blue one in the center. That way when the door is propped open its cute to.

I think my original post is a bit confusing. I am a city girl that now lives just outside of town. When I first moved here and wanted chickens it worried me because being a city transplanted person I though all the chickens would end up dead. But everyone one is fine and its been almost 4 yrs.

I am just like you! City girl moved right outside of city since '08. I want chickens but everyone keeps telling me that the smell is overwhelming, is that true? I also want to start a raise bed garden. I live in Virginia and we have this horrible clay soil that is hard to work with.

Back to the chickens, about how many eggs do you get? My neighbor told me that I did not need a rooster if I just wanted eggs. Is that true or does he just not want to deal with the noise?

Thank you in advance for your answers!!

Nashla, No you do not need a rooster to get eggs. You only need him if you want chicks. I do love hearing a rooster crow though. Mine will crow then the one down the road will crow. Then mine will crow again. Like they are talking to each other. If you have say 12 hens you can figure 8 eggs a day. Unless they are molting. Then they put a lot of their energy into producing new feathers. Also real hot days you might not get as many eggs. When a hen lays a egg she gets loud to. Hubby says ...»
they are BRAGGING to the other hens "look what I did",,, We have the coop away from the house a bit. But when I go out there it it really doesn't smell bad. When it does start to get bad then that means stop being so lazy and clean out the building and put down new straw. The hens LOVE new straw. They go through it making happy noises and get all the seeds in it. Then the old stuff should go on a pile for a year then put into your garden. You will have the best ever garden. Thank you Sherrie S.

He can build and is pretty good at it. The only problem we have is never enough time.

HOLY COW!!! Joan, this is phenominal. There are no accolades that haven't already been said. Those chickens sure do have one really nice house - that ain't no ordinary coop for sure! Wonderful GIANT SUNFLOWERS TOO!!! What birds do you get to nest in their house? Wrens took over our bluebird house this year. I loved watching the bluebirdes and would buy meal worms to feed them - they got so they'd come right on the deck railing to get their treats!! Your setting is just simply beautiful!! Thanks for sharing!

Susan I think Bernice was talking about a neighbors cows at 4am. I am asleep at that hour so I have no idea when the chickens start up. They don't bother me so I never really noticed. I know when I sit out on my back deck in the morning with my coffee I can hear them. But I like hearing them. Thank you Susan. You give very nice compliments.

Joan, Bernice WAS talking about the neighbors cows - it was just the way she worded it and we razz each other ALOT so I wasn't about to let that slide!! Just wait til you get to know us, we get a little crazy sometimes!!

I'm sure sitting outside w/your morning coffee listening to all the critters & wildlife wake up is just the best thing in the world. We love to go out and watch the hummers, cardinals, ...»

goldfinches, doves etc.etc. come to the feeders. Let me tell you, if we dare let one get empty they let us know in no uncertain terms that they want their food!!!

Susan? what? You have never heard a chicken bellow? huh? huh? I am sure there is one... somewhere! Too funny!

Ok , I guess i am totally ignorant of chickens and mating habits, I thought you had to have a rooster at least once to make eggs. No? Just to fertilize for babies? So, at what point is the rooster involved? ...»

Well , can I have shed envy here? We just had new carpet and flooring installed and nowhere to put our stuff! A nightmare! This would be a beautiful solution. I hope those chickens are grateful. I do like hearing chicken noises, I had a friend who had neighbors cows grazing across the field from her, very relaxing. And she didnt have to take care of them! And arent grazing animals of any kind so relaxing? OK susan, left myself wide open ....!
