Marble Covered Concrete Ball

I used PowerGrab glue, which dries clear to adhere the marbles to this concrete ball. Putting odd and unusual pieces in my gardens give me great pleasure, especially if I make them myself

Bear in mind Leida that what the state can and cannot do re: Imminent Domain can vary from state to state. However, Debi is correct, in most locales, if the state deems it necessary to take your land or house for the greater good, unless a large number of affected homeowners band together and get a really good attorney and are prepared to pay BIG bucks, you are pretty much SOL!!!

And Debi - yet another great project from you. ...»

@Doug - are you sure you're not thinking about that MIRROR ball???

About 5 miles down the road from us the state decided to put in an access road. The owner of the land where the road was going to go did not want to sell his land, he stated that it was not a fair price and refused to sell. The state condemned his land and took it. The road was put in and the land owner did not rec'v any compensation. Luckily it was just land and not his home. It wasn't much land, about an acre, but it was important to the state at the time. The sad thing is that within a year, the access road was closed.

Now that's really the pits!! What a shame - and of course the state would never tear the access road up and restore this poor guys land!!

If you've ever watched Jeff Foxworthy - or is it Foxworth?? - anyway, his "YOU MIGHT BE A REDNECK IF . . ." well his sidekick Ron used to always say "YOU CAN'T FIX STUPID" and you really really gotta wonder about some of the beaucratic blunders. Of course, there's never any need for justification on their part!!!

@Leida - you had NO IDEA you'd get an education in civics (Is that the right subject?) on this website, did you?? Better than any college classroom, or at least alot more diversified, that's for sure!!!!

LOL, yep, you can learn anything in Hometalk, which is a good thing. What we've learned here is before you plant anything that you definitely want to keep, check to see if there are any highway projects planned...or better yet, build your home in a VERY rural area with a 2 mile setback just in case

Neat project, but having a highway next door is a bummer.

My first one was with a bowling ball. A friend gave me the idea to use the concrete simply because it had a base. The bowling ball worked fine, I just wanted something different. In fact, I posted this bowling ball several weeks ago and received terrific response

that would be eminent domain, although its effects were certainly imminent.

Kelli, it certainly wasn't by choice. My grandmother's brothers built this home in 1918. There was only a dirt road then. Who would have thought that in 2012 it would be a four lane highway. The government cuts down our trees, takes out flower beds, sabotages houses and land all in the name of progress. Welcome to the 21st Century

You should/can use ThinSet on the bowling ball I've heard. Rough up the surface first and degrease it.

Glue a tuna can or other short can on the bottom of your bowling ball for a base, clean the bowling ball well, any good outdoor glue works well. I have 2 outside (except in winter), one grouted the other just glued, both are doing well after 3 years now.

PowerGrab has worked the best for me. We've tried different glues for outdoor projects with some not so good results. I used Liquid Nails craft glue the first time, it was ok, but I prefer the PowerGrab. On my first bowling ball I used the holder that was in the bag. I bought bag, ball for $1.00 at a yard sale, so I didn't feel bad ripping the hlder out of the bag to use as a support.

I love it. I have a metal gazing globe I hate. I wonder if I could get marbles to stick on it. RIght glue would help

LOL That's how I got my first bowling ball - same price, too. I read someplace that if the ball is sitting in the hot sun, it will expand and crack off the marbles/pebbles. Have you ever heard of that happening? I'd like to try covering other round objects that are smaller or larger than the bowling balls, but have not found anything that is suitable to use. Have fun Debi!

Hi Sharyl: The metal gazing ball you have - is it a smooth surface? If so you might want to take some fine grit sand paper and rough it up a little bit just to give it some "tooth" - something for the Power Grab to grab onto!

As to getting pictures posted - trust me, if I can do it so can you. Practice first on a reply - you can always delete it and you can also edit any reply even after it's posted!! Right on the ...»

bottom left where you are giving your reply it says in blue " Add Photos or Videos". Click on that - the hard part is figuring out which file your picture is in sometimes!! We're all here to help so if you get stuck just give a yell!!! ;~ )
