I need ideas on curtains for this big window area?!?

My kitchen is soooo boring with out curtains here...I know this but I'm no decorator and I need ideas from all you crafty moms...

A well to do friend has something like this. She had valances that were swagged from window to window.,and where the swags met she had tiny bird houses wrapped with tiny grapevine. It was in her breakfast nook. It looks beautiful. Just an idea.

Use roman bamboo blinds, makes any room look purfect. Or you can use roman blinds in fabric, comes in different colours. First of all, what do you want the curtains or drapes to accomplish? If it is to provide privacy, shade from sun or just to accent or dress up the windows then there are ideas for all of these needs, but its good to know first and foremost what you want the window treatments to do for you :D Great space by the way :D

For kitchens I like to keep things short, you don't want anyone tripping over curtains that can get tangled in the feet, or catching on fire on a windy day. A cornice would be nice - I've seen some great ideas for them made of cardboard, batting and fabric. Want something softer? How about short sheers - you can find them cheap at brylane.com, target.com and walmart.com. First though, Dawn Gagnon is correct, you have to have an idea of what You want to accomplish

Choose simple rods, extended out 2" from each window opening. Add grommet top valance in a fun, bold print. This flat fabric style valance is easy to take down and fluff in the dry or hand wash...making it a gr8t choice for a kitchen.

You already have privacy and light control, but you could add softness with drapes. Your side window doesn't have to match in style, but I would match the fabric for a roman shade. It's more formal if you go around the corner with long drapes.

Why not just add a valance. You can either make your own or purchase them. If you crochet or knit there are some amazing free patterns out there that way you can customize them to suit your needs,

when i moved in to my current house, there were "custom" treatments left behind, as the previous owner said. I was grateful to have them until i could get the ones that matched my decor. When I finally took them down to put up others, i laughed so hard I almost wet my pants. Those so called "custom" window treatments were two twin bed sheets sewn together on the short sides. Actually it was quite clever & it worked. Easy to clean & when you don't want that color anymore, you get to recycle them into your linen closet for a bed.

Balloon valances would look great, and they will add elegance and softness to the straight lines of the windows. I just did this to our sun room windows, and they look great. I do not like to let them up and down, for privacy (too time consuming for 11 windows), so I installed the 2" faux wooden blinds, and they look good together.

I don't like curtains or drapes hanging near my cooking zone so I get Planks measured to distance, pad them with old blankets bought at thrift store and staple fabric to match my kitchen chair cushions over the padding to make valances. It is CHEAP but also handy. If I want a barrier LOWER ... I use shutters (usually find them cast off at Habitat ReStore).
