This is so fun, BUT! I would get so caught up in looking at every thing I would end up laying at the bottom after tripping and falling. -
I love this! so creative -
@Donna G. - the trick is to look as you go UP the steps. Then you only end up skinning your shins or stubbing your toes!! LOL -
That is one of the most unique staircases I've ever seen! I just love it! -
I'm tearing up the carpet on my stairs, but the builder stapled into the treads and I can't get the staples out. They're breaking off. Can't pull them with a pliers or hammer them in either. Any suggestions... I will be removing the treads eventually and replacing them with solid oak. But for now... -
Quite a "trippy" idea ~~ !! (just had to write that.....) Very different, very unusual, very creative...!! -
The thing you might not know is that Donna (the woman who did these stairs) has a professional grade computerized stencil cutter that cuts out plastic stencils so she is able to do a lot of design work much easier than the traditional DIY.. You could probably get a similar result by printing out on computer paper then covering the paper front and back with clear contact paper prior to cutting the stencil with an exacto (razor) knife. The result would in all likelihood not be as crisp, ...» -
Thank-you Kelly! It's actually a vinyl cutter which is a beefed up version to a Cricut or Silhouette machine. The machine cuts out thin vinyl decals that can only be used once, as opposed to the thicker plastic material that traditional stencil material is made from. But it's the decal adhesion that gives you crisp lines like nothing else! -
I am insanely jealous of your vinyl cutter Donna- but you already knew that! I just use spray adhesive on the back of my stencils. It's not perfect but it seems to be good enough for my purposes. -
I've loved this project from the first time I saw it! You continue to inspire me! -
The border is so rich! I love how it drips down the stairs, with that dark brown. -
@Rhonda G, I used diagnal cutters and flat tip screwdrivers to pull the staples out of ours. We are replacing the treads with ash ones and facing the risers with ash plywood. I too loved the stencil and paint idea and the same comments from the husband. @Donna, were these featured in a magazine? I swore that I've seen them before, they are just so much fun. -
I think I would have sanded and stained them. But very creative!!! -
I am so doing this! Thanks. -
I don't have stairs, but I think this is really neat. John R said he was going to do it on his garage stairs - that will be so neat for a man or a boy's area using different logos. -
These are amazing! Such a fun, vintage look! Love your sweet furry face staring up at you. -
Thanks so much everyone! I've added a couple more pictures including the BEFORE. I sure don't miss the before shot... :) -
What an awesome masterpiece! Congrats! Love this. -
Donna, you have talent in every bone of your body. I love your projects! This one is fantastic! Thank you for thinking outside the box and inspiring others with your creativity! -
I think this might be one of my all time favorites! So original! -
I first discovered your blog through this project! Love it! -

These stairs are legendary. -
I think I'm going to try something similar with a nautical theme in our beach home! Stellar idea!
