I too would say deer unless you live in an area that doesn't have wandering deer. Then... something else critter wise...

Buy tomato dust . It is sold at any hardware . The tomato worm will eat the leaves but not the stocks. check under the leaves, the worms are quite large like a caterpillar.

Most likely a combination of critters. Is your area known for Deer. Your tomato plants were probably attacked by the tomato horn worm.Is there any evidence of white flies, aphids, scale. Look for webbing or recreation of sap.Start applying a horticultural oil.Spray over and under the leaves.

Deer, I'd say. Shave some Irish Spring soap around the plants, Bambi hates the smell.

If you suspect the tomato horn worm scouting is the best control. You could also spray with a BT spray such as Thuricide. Doesn't keep you from eating the tomatoes or the okra. Please be careful with vegetable dust as they can harm the bees. You could also have grasshoppers. If they eat enough of the leaves you have sprayed with the Thuricide it could control them. Don't know if you have the lovely lubber grasshopper or not but the only control for them is you. They are to big for any insecticide to work. Good luck PS for my lubbers I used my sandals, 2x4's or pruning shears

And this year at least in Missouri, it is bad. We are heading for the hottest June in record and the deer are looking for anything green . My "garden" is on the deck so I only have to worry about squirrels eating things, especially tomatoes, they love them.

It's probably deer. Contact a local barber or hairdresser and get hair clippings. The smell will keep most animals away as they think a human is near.

My Granny always said "cut worms". I am sure that is not the technical name, but they cut the plant in half. Just a possibility

Go to the hardware store and buy some deer fencing (it's not expensive at all) and enclose the area. If it keeps happening then maybe it's cutworms as someone else suggested.

There is a deer canister that works really well. It is called "Deer Off" by Havahart. Some hardware stores carry them. They cost about $20 for a package of 6 or 7, and they last about 3-6 months.

It's either a cutworms you can find hiding in daytime under leaves or it's deer. Yep, this solution is yucks. Collect a cup or two of urine and sprinkle it around boundary of stuff being eaten. You won't smell it in ground but deer will run off!

Racoons. Like Dwilson8774 said - get alot of urine and they will go to the neighbors house.

OR you could put deer food out (basically field corn) to distract them from your garden plants. That is what we did and we now enjoy an occasional siting of a Doe and her two fawns.

Irish spring soap cut up in chunks and placed in a sock and stapled to a post will help, also throwing it into your beds will keep deer and critters away.
