DIY Corner Door Shelf

We had a solid wood door and even though the door lacked the chippy paint, I figured I could embellish it in other ways.

We measured the door so that we would cut the door almost in half.

Using a skill saw we cut the door.

We butted up the doors at a 90-degree angle.

Keep in mind it is important to butt the smaller side into the larger side.

Once you have the sides lined up secure them with 3-inch wood screws.

I wanted something a little different for the shelves so we covered 1 x 6 pine boards with old rusty tin that was shaped over the wood with a lot of hammering!

The tin was secured to the wood with a few screws.

Now for the embellishments!

We then attached an old mechanic's light.

The soft flicker of the light on the shelf gives it a warm, old-timey feel.

We also fastened some antique door hardware to draw attention to the middle section of the shelves.

What I love about a corner shelf is that it adds dimension and function to the corner without taking up space.

If you frequent Antique Stores or Flea Markets you can find old doors.

The price will vary depending on the patina.

If you are worried about using an old door you can always use a new door.

Just remember to purchase a solid wood door as many of the new ones are hollow!

I absolutely love this! I recently acquired a door that’s a little narrower and I’m going to duplicate this. I think I might add two more shelves then you did. Do you have any thoughts on that?

I love this it looks so antiquey!!! As I was reading the comments I pictured in my head after someone talked about shutters. I thought well i guess you could put a bottom shelf at the base and screw a small set of shutters to the door to make a cabinet at the bottom. I kinda visioned the little end table that my grandmother had that had little doors that looked like shutters around the table and that is where she kept some play things for when my brother and I would come to visit (we were the only grandchildren she had) So I was thinking have the top 3/4 of the corner cabinet shelves and you could have the bottom 1/4 with the shutters. Just a vision. Maybe some day I will be able to make either style as I love your idea. I have the perfect corner in our apartment for this.

Yes, my husband and I have 2 new doors that were given to us. However they have door knob holes already drilled. We’ve decided that we’d use this glass door handles to fill the holes and use a clear cut glass globe for the light, to emulate the door handles. Thank you for the idea. Linda V.
