It's hard to tell from your photo how wet and shaded this area is, and/or what kind of mulch you have. Most mushrooms are a byproduct of really wet, but otherwise healthy soil, so try to reduce the moisture (without harming the plants, of course). That's about the only way to get rid of them, I think.
Just because of your post, I found out there really is a fungi with that name, the Latin for which is Phallus drewesii. Sadly, your mushroom does not look like it. I'm sure Steve's right about the moist soil.
Ann - I got nothin beneficial to add to this conversation - Sorry ;~(
BUT, what I really want to know about is the beautiful Victorian Lady in your profile pic. I'm positive I have her twin sister in my formal living room!! (You know, that room we all think we HAD to have and never gets used??)
I know exactly what you mean. No French in my family but I do have a really strong affinity for the "Gone With The Wind Era" and of course that led right into the Victorian Era. I don't necessarily believe in reincarnation - but, IF I did have a past life or lives - it must have taken place in both of those times.
