Scarves Over my Bed Headboard for an Optical Illusion in Sizing

When we bought our bedroom set, we bought the headboard and mattresses in a QUEEN SIZE. Many, many years later we decided to changed our mattresses to a KING SIZE. Me in love (still) with my headboard, not being financially able to change it, and not wanting to damage my own, I decided to work with what I had using scarves. This is what I did with the scarves in order to conceal the extra inches of the mattresses from the left and right sides of the HB. What do you think about the idea?

Picture showing how the scarves are entertaining/distracting the eyes in order for one not to notice the two different widths between the headboard and the mattress....

Possibly a better picture for viewing the work of the scarves.

The scarves on a slight angle for another view.

I am clueless as to why some look at a posted picture and begin to critique everything in the picture, particularly when those things were not the topic/focus of the posting. I seriously doubt those offering such negativity are professionals. Professionals know how to offer help without offending/negativity. Please examine your intent before posting. I believe this site is to offer encouragement and share ideas.......this method results in learning, experimenting and explanding.

Lieda..forget the negative remarks on here..the question is..."Do you like it?"...Yes?..than nothing else really matters! I love it! I don't have a headboard yet for my cali-king bed but i did hang a long draping scarf over the bed with a large mirror in it until I get done making my headboard. Smashing idea and good job Lieda!

If it's hard to digest the critical opinions than better don't post anything. Once you do post it you should be aware of positive AND negative reaction.Somebody might have a positive comment but someone else might not. That is what makes us different: the difference. And the change of different ideas might bring the evolution to a different stage.

@Becky H. Uh huh - and just WHAT are YOU thinking, Lady??? LOL

Even though this wasn't MY post I say KUDOS to those of you who took issue with the negative, snarky remarks. Becky you got it exactly right, WHY take issue over something that wasn't even part of the discussion. Some of you just HAD to find something to pick over didn't you!!!!

As a "professional" - I HAVE been in the same pair of shoes and I was absolutely ripped apart ...»

    - and believe me, it ain't NO FUN! Not every decorating idea you'll ever come across will be to your liking but not once did I see the question posted: "HOW WOULD YOU LIKE THIS IN YOUR HOUSE"?

Personally and professionally, I think Leida did a great job of disguising the headboard issue by draping the sheer, lightweight scarves (not flimsy)! When draping & swagging fabric it needs to be like this to lay properly. Regular fabric would add too much weight, both physically and visually & would look heavy. Fabric & color have visual weight! The two tone adds interest and the shape mimics the design of the headboard. The side panels flowing down the wall help eliminate the gap between the headboard and the kingsize mattress. A King mattress is 18 wider than a Queen so something has to be done with the extra 9" on each side!! I think her solution was brilliant!! I really had to look at the picture for quite awhile to figure out what some of you were griping about!!!

So Leida - straighten up & align the HB and mattress and get the plastic off the shades and you will be all set!! It's amazing all the little knit picky stuff that when we're living w/something it totally escapes our notice but put it in a picture and EVERYBODY jumps on it!

    YOU ARE A WINNER GIRL!!!

@Therese and the others that gave positive feedback...Y'all are SO RIGHT! Everyone has different resources available to them and tries to use what they have to get the look that they want...I think this is very attractive and creative way to Beef up a headboard that was too small for the bed...It's a little fancy for my personal taste but I know several people that would love to copy this technique! and maybe if the colors were softer and more pastel it would actually be in keeping with my ...»
own style....my Hubby loves the colors that are shown, but I tend to prefer the lighter airier colors... I think this concept is just Fabulous!

telling someone not to post what you want, just to not get ripped apart by people who need to pick at details that were not part of the question you asked is wrong, you have the right to post what you want without fear of RUDENESS!

I would do the scarves and forget the headboard, looks like everything isn't centered anyway?

Mariana, when I posted this, I knew that not everybody was going to like the idea, and not to like it is ok. I'll be honest to you though, the first negative comments did HURT a little, but I'm fine.

Great idea!! I wouldn't have noticed the overlap of the mattress unless I had read the caption--and I'm SUPER DUPER OCD!!! I would, however, remove the plastic from the lampshades because it is a fire hazard.....

what is your favorite color? go to houzz. com to get some idea of coloring walls. change the wall color and and paint the headboard night stand white, get rid of the scarf, and change the bed covering, get really creative. try painting over the bed right now the room is to bland. not trying to hurt your feeling but use color. dont be afraid of color, or texture

Anita G, my favorite colors are actually yellow, and green that is why I used them in my master BR. Thank you for that website. I sure will check it out as I do love to see paint jobs and color combinations. I'm not afraid of colors at all as I have many of them adorning my different walls. I actually posted these pictures to share an idea of the scarves usage only. I'm happy with the color combinations of the walls, and my furniture the way they are.
