DIY Wood Wine Rack

So here’s a project I built back in December (one of the gifts I built for several family members ;-) )and I’m just now posting it, but hey, better late than never, right?! As I was looking for ideas for Xmas gifts that I could make, I came across a beautiful DIY wine rack made of wood that just called out to me and I knew that wine rack would be the gift to make! But of course, before I made one for everyone else, I just HAD to test it out first by building one for myself! (Doesn’t everyone do that??)
The wine rack I found was on Shanty-2-Chic’s awesome website. You can find the tutorial for the wine rack here: http://www.shanty-2-chic.com/2014/02/diy-wine-rack.html.

I did end up making a few modifications to give it a little more pizzaz!

I did keep the length of the wine rack the same as in their instructions and built the backing as instructed. However, I placed the shelves lower to the bottom to create more room at the top to allow room for my design.

Here you can see how I marked the location of each shelf prior to attaching them.
And here are the attached shelves. You can see that there is quite a bit of room above the top shelf to allow room for my design.
I attached the front boards on the shelves following the plans on the Shanty-2-Chic website and also stained using the same color as in the original instructions (Dark Walnut).

Once the stain had dried, I added my design to the top of the wine rack.
The only other modification I made was the label holders. I ended up using larger label holders than what was used in the original plans so I could fit the name of the type of wine on each shelf. On card stock, I printed several names of types of wines and then cut out the names using my paper-cutter (cut them to a size that would fit the label holders I used). So each person who received one of these wine racks also received a stack of labels with different wine types that they could switch out depending on the type of wine on each shelf of the rack! Here are some more pics of my modified version of the wine rack:

I missed the part that shows how the wine bottles stay on the shelf. I noticed in one of the first photos there appeared to be some sort of metal fittings in the middle of the shelves. I couldn't find any mention of that. So, how do you keep the bottles from rolling oh?

I'd just add a slat of wood on the front that would prevent the rolling of the bottle. You could make the ID Tag larger as well! Great project!

I think that wine racks are so nice to have as a decoration in your kitchen! Not only do they make a good decoration, but also they are very functional and great organization. I love it when kitchens are clean and tidy. I think I want to buy a wine rack for my kitchen! http://www.wjgmercentile.com/dept-45160
