How We Painted Our Aluminum Siding (with Brushes!)

Although we plan to replace our aluminum siding some years down the road, we knew that we wanted to give it a facelift for the time being. We had decided that it needed some new paint (the old color was faded and dirty), but we didn't want to pay someone to do it. We ended up saving ourselves thousands of dollars by doing it ourselves! It was a ton of work, but totally worth it in the end. We chose to go with brushes based on control over the painting, minimal prep work and the equipment we had access to. Visit my blog to make sure that you know what you're getting yourself into, but painting your own aluminum siding can be a great way to give your exterior a facelift!
This is the house with freshly cleaned siding before we painted it.
This is the finished product! What a difference!
We were able to easily access some faces of the house by standing on the porch roof. We worked together painting towards each other to avoid the paint drying and creating lap marks.
We had to use a super tall extension ladder to reach the highest points of the house, so safety was very important.
We even had to rig up a paint brush extender to reach some of the highest points.
The second full Saturday of work involved renting scaffolding for the front of the house.
The front house required scaffolding and a ladder to reach everything.
We finished the last corner section in about 1/2 day, and it felt so great for this huge project to be done!
All told, this project took 2 full Saturdays, 1 half Saturday and some time in the evenings. It was a lot of work, but so worth it in the end!

I think the bottom brick whitewashed would make color pop its an easy process we did it to our brick bottom home and i loved it. You can go online and look at before and afters the differance is amazing.

I would absolutely paint the brick. It would probably be easier to hire someone though. When we bought our house 15 years ago, our house was like yours; the bottom was brick and the top was white wood siding. When I told my husband I wanted to remove the brick he thought I lost my mind, but we did. We had to remove it in very small sections and brick by brick because when we tried to take out big sections the entire wall (inside included 😳😬😲) started coming with it! I don’t know how my husband didn’t bury me in the back field. It was back breaking work but so worth it in the end. Mountain rock was WAY cheaper so we covered the bottom with it and the top new siding. Our home is so pretty.
