Looking for advice on "home substitute" wood putty

question for all you woodworkers out there: I am re-furbishing a large 4' oval mirror,and had to cut a new back panel for it. it has some small nail holes in it i want to patch before I paint. any suggestions as to household substitutes for a simple wood putty? or suggestions for a decent inexpensive brand i could pick up at local hardware?

Durhams Wood Putty - water based and easy to work with if you want to buy one from the local box store.

Here is a table that I puttied and stained...I had an old table that was just no good...made the top and attached the new top to the old legs. The chair seat covers are from a canvas drop cloth.

You can also sand off some wood, collect the sawdust and mix it with carpenters glue.
