My $3.00 farm table styled pallet desk

Desiring a substantial desk for my work office located in my basement, this long farm table styled desk was created with pallet boards and reclaimed cedar planks for about $3.00. (had to buy new screws!)

It is one LONG amazing desk that's as sturdy as all get out! Cat likes it too. :)

Cost: $3.00 Difficulty: Moderate

I nearly painted the top at first. I'm glad I didn't. Love the woodsy warm look! http://www.funkyjunkinterio

Aren't pallets great? I made a stand for my flat screen using a pallet and the bottom part of a wrought iron bird cage. It looks very cool. Good job!

Love the idea of using pallets, but where are people getting pallets? Are they typically used or new pallets?

Love the amount of work space.... but the surface of the desk doesn't appear to be too good for writing/paperwork. I might use the idea but add something more suited to writing directly beneath the computer and immediately surrounding it... maybe a piece of re-purposed stone counter top or a piece of butcher block?

    Thanks everyone!

Penny, I find pallets at a firetruck manufacturer where I do some work. Most any business that gets shipped goods has a stack of them. All it takes is asking permission. :)

Laurie, you are right that the writing surface isn't completely flat. I was ok with that, however if I wasn't, I'd be tempted to put a slab of glass across the entire top. I still may. At the ...»

time, I was using the surface for photo shoots and no glare was best.

I like your table. I ended up using an old door in my studio for additional table space but need one more. So I am on the lookout for another old door. Heheh

You can usually find free pallets at home improvement stores. They toss them out so you have to pick through for good unbroken ones. We use them to keep the garbage cans off the ground. I have stacked them at different levels in the yard to put pot plants on. We also used two with a treated sheet of plywood on top for a small deck. Pallets are very useful.

Thanks to all who gave me ideas about where to find pallets. Marsha, I will check Ladd's. I love this desk idea and how to repurpose pallets, and I have found many other ideas about using pallets on Pinterest.

I love love love this idea. I have been looking to make a desk possibly for my spare bedroom and my own personal bedroom... and while my husband is on a diy kick, I MIGHT ask him to make this for me. BTW, sometimes you can pick up pallets free on craigslist!

Love the desk. Going to try a miniature version of yours (6-8 feet) and try to make it a bit modular so it can get in/out of the room.

Thanks everyone! Kate, that's a full sized vintage ironing table. It looks small because the desk is so huge! :) Christopher, your idea sounds awesome!

Love love the table! Have never thought about repurposing pallets...we don't have a Ladd's in Laurel, MS...any other place that I might be able to get them (i.e. Lowe's, McCoy's, grocery stores, etc)??? I'll check out the tutorial & give a hand at it! Thanks!

@Lynn, I have found that some schools get supplies delivered on pallets, and they pay people to take them away, and smaller automotive parts stores are often a great source for them too, and are only to happy to have someone get them. I know that our Lowe's here gives them back to the company who does their shipping. Also, check and see if you have a company who builds pallets and restores old beat up ones by you - often they are willing to give away some of the worse ones away, which ...»
basically just means they need more work to fix them then what it is worth so you would get less boards per pallet. But free is free.
