Very clever, and nicely designed. It's hard to tell from the photo, but I would warn against putting any spices and herbs in this little cabinet. I am guessing this space gets pretty warm next to the fridge, and that's not good for herbs and spices. -
Oh my Gosh, I love this idea!! Very creative and considering myself one of the many Queens of Creating Space in very little space, this would be perfect! I'll definitely have to look into this. -
Love it! This is seriously so amazing, what a great idea! I would love to do this. -
Not so sure about putting foods in there because of the heat of the appliance... But, it would be an awesome place for cookbooks, aluminum foil, plastic wrap, etc. :) -
Not a good idea at all. A refrigerator requires space around it for air circulation. By restricting air flow, you are causing it to work harder and get hotter as it does its job. Also, the heat from the frig could start cooking your food in the cans and/or cause it to spoil or make family members sick from Botulism. -
The side of my fridge is not warm at all. The back is warm and has room for venting -
great for those with back problems and have trouble bending -
I think this is an amazing idea! As long as you shop vac out the front of the fridge often it should be fine! My husband is in HVAC and works on many refrgerators. He says the main reason for a unit overheating or working a compressor hard, is because it cannot breath from the front. If this were the case, I don't believe they would make build-in's. As far as food in cans or jars spoiling, there is not enough heat to cause that. Most canning processes are heat processed anyhow. -
In my dad's kitchen, there was an empty wall space, about 24 inches wide. He knocked out the sheetrock from that wall, placed shelves all up and down the opening (of course they are only one can deep, but about 6 cans wide). Then he added a cabinet door to the front. Wa-la, a little space for canned goods. My dad, an 90+ year old WWII vet, who had to quit school at the age of 9 to help support his family is one of the smartest men I've ever known! -
Fantastic idea. Botulism is caused from jars or can's being improperly sealed or not processed at the correct temperature or time. -
Thank you for all the wonderful comments. The side of my fridge is not warm/hot at all. I have had this up for approximately 5 months now and I have not had any issues with the food warming up at all. This has been a dream come true in my kitchen. -
Great idea, but I would have to use a flat handle (like from a dresser drawer) because I would find a way to walk into it...lol -
My dad built one of these around 30 years ago. Had a wider space, so made it with 2 shallow sides of shelves as well as a space to hang a couple of folding chairs. It was great and they had no problems with their fridge. If I had space next to my fridge, I would build one. They are great. -
What a super fix..good for you! -
Ingenious! I have lots of unused space wayyy behind the refrigerator that would house something like this nicely. However, I would have to cut into the wall which doesn't sound like much fun. I like what you have done! -
wonderful idea. if I wasn't moving I would put one in my home. we have a space just like yours. I keep my brooms and folding step ladder there. -
My Mother -in-law had one of these. It holds alot and is organized as well. Great space saver. -
I am seeing this in my new kitchen... -
The Arts Desire, I would be careful what food you store behind a fridge. It gets pretty warm back there - not good for some items. -
Checked to see if I could fit such beside my fridge... NOT, but such a fabulous idea. And NO it won't cause your canned goods to go bad. -
I love how so many are concerned about the food getting warm, also causing the fridge to over work. It's wonderful how they care about others, with that said, it would also be great if they read all the comments to see it will not cause any harm. I have one built right next to the fridge and I have never in 20 yrs had a problem with the food going bad or hurting the fridge. Kudos to all that care and for Classy Clutter for posting. :) -
What keeps it stable ? It looks a little tippy and unstable.I am going to make one but wouldn't want it to fall over when pulling it out.
-
The only thing i'd do differently is to split it to top/bottom so the entire thing wouldn't need to be pulled out for one can. Very smart, I've seen these before. If we all did things like this, we could all live in smaller homes ! :) -
How to get one more "Honey-Do" done!
