Patriotic Gem Lantern

I realized I needed some decorations for the front porch and I thought a little lantern for the table would be a nice touch. Presenting the Patriotic Gem Lantern!
I used 'gems' (clear) and a battery powered 'candle' from the dollar store, stain glass paint from Oriental Trading Company, glass jar and hot glue. This was a pretty quick craft and, if careful of the hot glue or you use a different glue, this could be a fun kids craft!
Paint your jar in the colors you like best! I did this one in Red, White and Blue for the upcoming Fourth of July.
Using hot glue and the gems, I started adding them around the jar. As I went up rows I tried to off set each row from the previous but wasn't real picky. The gems are all slightly different sizes - some round, some more oblong. I also generated a ton of glue hairs, I felt I was stuck in a spider web!
I added some bandannas to the table for decoration (yes I have a stash of bandannas and will be doing a few crafts with them!) and placed the Patriotic Gem Lantern smack in the middleish.

Does the dollar tree have already coloured glass marbles? Are you painting the marbles or the vase?

Did your hot glue keep the gems on? I haven't had much luck with them staying on the jar but I love the idea :-) not sure what other kind of glue would work...any ideas?

that would protect it from weather for sure! Mine is on a covered porch so isn't exposed to sun or rain, seems to be ok so far!
