Male and female sagos?

Are these two different varieties of sago palms or are they sprouting these two different things in their center for fertilization. Sure would like to know more about this.

This huge thing just sprouted up

Then this huge spike globe sprouted up on another

Yes they are. The tall spike is the male and the other is the female.

You will later see the female "flower" start to separate & expose reddish seed pods. You can harvest them - wear gloves as I have found the brown fuzz to cause itching. You can google methods to propagate new plants, but it can take quite a long time. You can also do nothing & the cycle will repeat in a couple of years.

Please be careful with the reddish seed pods. You can grow more plants from the pods, and yes, it will take a long time. The how-to process can be found online in many videos. All the videos I've seen say to wear protective gloves when handling, as the insides of of the pods are toxic to humans and animals.

  I cut them off after they grow to a nice size. Just use a saw like you would use to trim small tree branches seems to be the best way I have found to remove them. Take some cinnamon, just the regular kind you use in the kitchen and sprinkle around the bottom part that you just cutoff from the mother plant (it acts like a root hormone, and keeps it from rotting and getting disease) Then let them sit somewhere in the shade for 5 to 7 days till the cutoff part dries. Next step is to trim off most of the stalks because they are going to turn yellow and ugly anyway. Leave at least 6 or 7 of the top leave stalks, because they still need those to absorb the rays from the sun. Then put them into pots, put them where they will get afternoon shade if it's hot in your area, and sun in the morning, and go easy on watering them and let the soil dry out on the top before you water them again. Then in about 6 months you will have roots all the way around the bottoms, then you can plant in the ground, or sell them. I think they are a lot better than waiting 20 years for the seed to grow. They come out lush and green. Very easy to root, just takes time.
