If your sofa has smooth fabric that is in relatively good shape, you can paint it for a quick, cheap update!
First, mask any wood on your sofa to protect it from paint.
Second, thin your paint with water - you can test a pillow beforehand if you'd like.
Third - paint in two or three thin coats, depending on the color of your sofa and your paint.
Note - the fabric will be somewhat stiff, but not hard.
This is a temporary solution for my sofa, but totally worth doing it until I do it with drop cloth fabric. No more dated plaid fabric on my $60 thrift store purchase!

how is it holding up and is it comfortable?

I just did it last week, but I have painted furniture with acrylics and latex before and it holds up forevere. The fabric is a bit stiff - stiffer than before, and probably not very comfortable to bare skin, but for regular sofa-sitting, it is fine.
