Shade Sail Installation in Atlanta Area

We were asked to modify a deck and mount a shade sail. This customer had the vision and we were able to get it done.

The customer was looking to get the benefits of the sun block, but still allow them to have the view from the deck.

Quick and much more cost effective that a fully enclosed patio or pergola type rig. Plus it probably keeps out some minor rains as well.

How is the center held up?

I did the same thing~sorta! I put bungies on the corners, so the wind wouldn't rip the sail, worked fantastic

I did the same except with a shade cloth. It blocks the sun but still lets the rain and air through.

@Glenda..that's not the center, but the side of the sail if you look closely you can see it is clipped up

That's how the ancient Romans shaded the Colosseum. Archeological digs around the site, found sail making stalls for sewing/inserting sails around the tops of the Colosseum. Good idea but not new!

So we have a revival of old ideas but a new application - being used on homes now instead of standard canopies.

Have to admit, I wondered the same thing as Glenda since there was no center pole - which would just be in the way. I see that the corner is attached waaaay up on the side of the house now!!

Is this water proof so if it's just a light rain w/no howling wind you could still sit out there??

@violet, the installation, required us to waterproof the pentetrations on the house siding, we used silicone based products along with lag screws. This is a hardcoat stucco on a "stick-built" home. On the deck, we reinforced the 6x6's on the outside to handle the load forces. The nuance on the design is that the sail needs to pointed into the prevailing winds and reinforced against a side wind (the customer had an engineer spec the requirements for us)

@Marg - yeah really. Guess that's why these things are best left to the pros to figure out!! Looks simple but apparently there are alot more technicalities to consider than meets the eye!!!

These a great on poles on playgrounds also. I have seen them done the same way in retirement communities too.

Dimesions of the sail? Was it a standard size or custom made for the space? Where did it come from?
