Painting subway tile

I live in a house that some idiot put 4" bathroom subway tile on the floors in the kitchen and bathroom. Not only is it very slippery when wet, it is really ugly. I know I can (and have) paint it on the walls but what about on the floor.

I have no idea / no expertise, but my initial thought would be to paint (with the appropriate paint) and then seal it. When we tiled our bathroom floor, we added a sealer on top. I'm sure some sort of sealer would help the paint stay / not scratch easily. You could also look at a polyurethane coat to seal it. I'm not sure if this would help with the slippery when wet problem. Just my initial thought / two cents. Good luck!!
