Accent lighting in kitchen

Margaret LaRose
by Margaret LaRose
Ok, this heading may be wrong but I wasn't sure what to call it. I am a sucker for those rope lights, you know, the ones you can connect together and even use outside. Well, I was at a big box hardware store the other day and bought a string of grape lights. They are so pretty and since my kitchen decor is kind of like that, I thought I would buy them. They are still in the box and I am not sure what to do with them. Any ideas? I can still take them back if I need to. I still have the receipt and nothing has been opened.

As far as inside the possibilities are endless, but outside? My brain went into over-drive! These would be breath taking at night as a backdrop to a patio wine bar, or hung inside shrubs or even small trees near the deck. I need to get some of these!

Just know that these are great dust collectors :)

I've read this "question" several times, and as a lighting person, I seldom suggest any particular type of lighting fixtures.......so please excuse me for voicing my opinion, but I would return them as fast as possible. Sorry.....Gary

Hi Margaret! You say your decor is in line with this motif? How about hanging them from a Pot Rack? You know the Pot Racks that are hung from the ceiling or the wall? That would be really pretty and functional! xo

I'd either hang them in a bush outside, great looking at night as Teresa said, but agree with Landlight$ - return them and get your money back. I'm sorry to be blunt, just my opinion

All cute ideas above, but I have to agree with Connie and LandlightS.
  • Jeanette S Jeanette S on Jul 17, 2013
"Cute" today is "dusty and nasty" tomorrow! Unless you have hours and hours to spend on keeping things like this clean and you love the chores, take them back! HA! I love "cute" but I am just sick of trying to keep up with the cleaning...you hear me....sick, sick of it! HA! (I am retired had have books to read and naps to take! Frequent dusting is not on my list...not yet...and probably won't be!)

If you have a pretty wine rack, try handing the lights around it. Or if you are not a fan of dusting (and really, who is?), put them in a cupboard (or china cabinet) with glass doors as a backdrop for pottery or other collectible nick-nacks.

Who's worried about dusting? If you are, you'd have to get rid of everything you own! lol...use the lights where ever you like, decorate with them (the look kitchen-y to me). Life is way too short, enjoy!!
  • You could hang a piece of lattice from your ceiling and thread the lights through it to create your own indoor trellis. You could hang it over an island or above the table.
  • Colleen Novosel Colleen Novosel on Jul 17, 2013
    Outside, yes, inside no....sorry
  • Anita Anita on Jul 17, 2013
Lots of great ideas, I have to agree with Barbara, life is way to short so if you like grape lights hang them any place you like. ;)

I agree with Barb and Anita as well. I would find a pretty basket and add grape greenery and wire the grapes to a pick so they can be strategically placed amongst the greenery. They would make subtle lighting on the counter, niche or shelf after you turn off the kitchen lights for the night........that warm fussy feeling every time you walk past or into the kitchen. 'Course you have to weigh the cost of the expense of the grapes once the lights start burning out, too.

I had a grape themed kitchen at one point and had bought the same grape lights. I took a piece of lattice and hung it from my ceiling with eye hooks. I then weaved silk ivy and white christmas lights through out it and hung the grape lights. it was beautiful, especially at night, and it was a great talking piece. I was very disappointed when we moved and had to take it down!!

I love Kimberly Campbell's idea...I say go for it!!! You could take her idea outside as well and hang it over a table on a covered patio or deck..how pretty at night when entertaining. For the record, dusting does not bother me at all. 90% of the picture frames and furniture in my home are black and I dust every other day...it becomes routine and only takes about an hour to do. I just carry my coffee with me and stroll through my house. It is also a great way to see and appreciate the beautiful things around you.

How about turning them into a small wreath for the wall or door? Perhaps a grapevine form and some extra greenery?
  • Gail Salminen Gail Salminen on Jul 17, 2013
@Margaret LaRose I agree with those that say use them. If it is what you like it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. As for dusting, a swiffer is pretty handy. I like the ideas with the lattice as well as around a wine rack. Do let us know what you do with them and hopefully post a pic.

@Jeanette S Oh honey I feel your pain!!!! Been there done that! @Gail Salminen Swifter makes a tool that can dust grapes like these now? Seriously, no joke, I had no idea! Nice!!! @Margaret LaRose you can also use your vacuum cleaner with the attachment, which I think would be really quick and you wouldn't have to purchase anything else! $$ Saved!! Yay!

I have used these on my xmas tree along with white lights. Added some maroon and gold balls. Also I took clear and purple colored cellophane paper and cut 8 squares. Twisted them to look like a flower and placed them randomly through out the tree. They reflect light. Received tons of compliments that season!

@Sia@South 47th I have used my swifter on many items with small crevaces and it works like a charm, but then maybe I am not as critical as other LOL. But I do believe the one I have can do a good job on grapes - I have many nick nacks and it does them just fine and takes no time at all.
  • Sia@South 47th Sia@South 47th on Jul 17, 2013
@Gail Salminen WTG!!! I guess I just don't have a lot of knicky knacks anymore, probably because I got tired of constantly cleaning them LOL!!!! I'm 56 and sick of cleaning things that are catch alls for dust and crap! hahahahhahaa
  • Gail Salminen Gail Salminen on Jul 17, 2013
@Sia@South 47th LOL got you beat am 61 and just discovered this month what this product can do. I used to only dust if someone was coming over LOL But since this is such a quick fix I am dusting weekly - can't believe it myself!

I bought 2 of these and the effects in my kitchen was beautiful. People kept asking where I got them... and I like the idea above of putting them in a fruit bowl and lighting them in the evening..
  • Margaret LaRose Margaret LaRose on Jul 18, 2013
Thank you all! I fully understand the dusting problem but life is to short to worry about that. They make me happy so I am keeping them. I will try the bowl idea and I love the idea with the lattice. I will post pics if/when.......

You could use them as a table runner during Thanksgiving. Lay down a vintage lace tablecloth or table runner, place the grapes down the middle. Just have an extension cord at the end of the table and tuck it under the table with duct tape. Stagger some pumpkins, greens, nuts, squashes and candles and voila. It will also light up the table to show off all the great goodies. Or maybe around the arch between a kitchen and dinning room......the possibilities are unlimited and just fun.

@Gail Salminen Looking good! I'd never have guessed your age! xo
  • Therese C Therese C on Jul 21, 2013
A very easy way to dust things with small crevices,or picture frames, or what have you..is to use a very soft paintbrush. That is what I use and it is a super time saver when deep cleaning!
  • Renata Renata on Jan 17, 2015
Great idea Therese!! Thank You! And I love the grape lights Margaret, have never seen those before. If you don't use them you could always send them to me...lol
