Our Carpeted Garden

Disgarded carpet works great for 'mulch' to keep the weeds out of your garden! Place it between rows because it's gentle on your knees when you do have to pull a few weeds between plants. A great way to recycle!

Our carpeted garden is fenced in so we don't have to share the produce with our local bunny population.
The garden enclosure is 50 x 50 and in full sun. After years of trying to garden in partial sun, it's a joy to have a garden that actually produces! We took a part of our alfalfa field for a picnic area and the veggie garden.
Our onion row. As you can see, the carpet doesn't exactly match, but we're not going for esthetics here. We're wanting plenty of produce and an easier garden to maintain! When it rains, the rains soaks in, but weeds don't grow through.
These are the staked tomatoes. We have additional small pieces of carpet between the plants and longer strips between rows.
Popcorn! As you can see, the popcorn and less-obnoxious, smaller weeds can co-exist quite nicely. :-)
My pole beans climb one side of the perimeter fencing. It's 50' per side and 4' high. Works great, if you've got a bad hip. ;-) That's my faithful GSD who just died in May at 12+ years old. :-(((

Don't you worry about chemicals leaching from the carpet and affecting your produce?

you might also try your local tree trimming services.... I used to work for one and we used to just take the wood from the chippers and dump it in several places designated for it. If you talk to them and they're close enough they might be willing to dump a truck load at your place or they might direct you to their dumping area so you can get it yourself.

Thank you, Cathy. The local electric company has promised me 5 loads of chips, each load about 5 x 5 x 8 feet. But if they don't come through, I'll definitely keep your suggestion in mind!
