but she can't afford them. Does anyone know of a substitute? It is on an upstairs outside balcony. The look is a New Orleans house.

Home Depot, Lowes, and Menards sell aluminum railings. Different heights and lengths. Cheaper than wrought iron and maintenance free.

here in my under30,000 town of fairly poor people, the better moneyedd 'uptown' folks toss everything from ruined {to them} pots & pans, to beautiful old furniture & all in between. It is an old shed W / 3 rooms -to look at, is like Slightly neater than city dump. ! Called ' Bargain town. " You name it-98 % chance they have it. way cheaper than some of our 2nd- hand places. Check your city & close by- also scrap metal- fence building resell-use phone to ask- Do not tell you have such beautiful house- "just say 2nd story old house we are trying to fix up ' to be safe. Hope these ideas help. ps:- wear Not great clothes. $ $ seen as "raise price " !

How many feet do you need?

Salvage, aluminum or paint whatever you find for the look.

Don't know how many feet you need. Pictures would really help. If the main issue is safety and there are beams or walls on either side, you could put two or three rows of black steel pipe (Home Depot) across the opening. Also, check out architectural salvage in your vicinity, or ReStor (Habitat for Humanity resell store) if one is available where you live. I've seen a lot of old railing in salvage places but it's usually in bad shape and needs a lot of restoration.

The house looks similar to the one I included in the question. It truly is for looks but safety is a concern. May need railing to pass inspection.

What about cheaper pool fencing. They can then spray paint it & grow a creaper / vine over it to disguise the cheaper look.

You can grow many plants in pots but I say fake it until you make it.... if necessary get some fake plants from a cheap shop - we call them $2 shops in New Zealand and some quite real looking vines. Either way from the road side no one will be able to see the difference.
