What killed my kobold gayfeather?

My plant was thriving well until I noticed some small white stuff around the base, I think I over watered it. Will it come back?

I am not positive ,however from the photo it appears to have webbing which is a sign of spider mite. Improper watering will unfortunately kill the plant. I would cut the remainder all the way down and use a horticulture oil and wait to see if any new growth appears.

I agree with all the above; however, I will add that if you have been watering your Liatris spicata 'Kobold' (botanical name) more than once a week under normal weather conditions, you have been over doing it. Usually it only needs a good watering once a week. Of course, if you're suffering from a drought, then you will need to water maybe twice a week.

In the SW Florida area I live in I seem to get these frequently. At the slightest sign of these furry little mites I spray on a home made mixture of Dawn blue dish soap & water. I don't have an exact amount of each item however in a small - medium spray bottle I would use 2 tablespoons of Dawn and add the bottle with water. I keep this mixture on hand along with just a plain spray bottle of water to use approx. sometime in about 12-24 hrs. I spray the areas with a good amount of the soapy mixture ( it should be a pretty light blue color) until it barely starts running down the stem of the plant. I even spray the entire plant lightly. Then wait. Depending on the results I then take the plant to the kitchen sink if it is small and use the sprayer on on it, making sure the soap is gone. If a larger plant. Leave it here it stands or take it outside, due the same. Then later spray with the clear water to rinse clean. It has kept many of my tropical plants alive. Including money tree , lucky bamboo as well as my rope plant. The rope plant is the hardest to keep free of these mites due to the thickness and form of the leaves. GOOD LUCK !!! Hope it works for you.

I agree we the spider mite infestation; however, you only need add a few drops of original Dawn to a water mister. Be sure to shake well. This will work for any plant, but be sure to get the undersides of leaves as well as the top of the soil as that's where they predominantly gather. In this case, your plant doesn't really have leaves, so concentrate on the top of the soil after you've cut away a lot the dead growth. Mist with the mixture daily after your regular watering until you see results. You don't want to get the soap deep in the soil as it will kill your plants. Just the surface and the underside of leaves will do. This fall, do the same to plants you bring in from outside to contain any potential problems before they get started. Those spider mites won't stand a chance to your green thumb and a few drops of Dawn!
