How can I clean a burned on, yucky stove?

While frying some food, the pan boiled over. By the time I was done frying 6 more servings the oil had turned into a sticky , black morass of baked on grease.
I've tried hundreds of dollars worth of commercial cleaners, good for taking up space under my sink and not much more. Any good DIY solutions? I've also tried lemon juice and baking soda, vinegar and baking soda.
I figure next it's the scrap yard and a new stove. But I am inherently cheap, I like my old cheap stove. I want to save it! Help!

Try wetting the burnt on area w/ water, then sprinkle w/ dishwasher powder. Let it sit for awhile, then wipe off. Get any remaining w/ a steel wool pad such as SOS. Hope it works. It works whenever I forget something on the stove & burn it in a saucepan.
  • Can the pieces with stickiness be removed? I had a stove and the manual stated to remove pieces place in a large trash bag outside and add 1 cup of ammonia. Tie up the bag and let sit overnight. Then using gloves remove the pieces and wash well with soapy water. Toss the bag.

if glass top use a scrub daddy sponge and bar keepers friend, neither will scratch top, just slightly wet sponge and scrub away, may take some time and muscle but it comes off. sponge daddys are from QVC wonderful item, can use on crystal and no scratches either

Ha, be interesting to see if this works. someone put orange peels in vinegar and let it sit for 5 days. poured the liquid into a spray bottle and after sprinkling baking soda on surface of oven spritzed the surface with the liquid off orange peel and let it sit 20 minutes and the oven wiped clean. It might be just the ticket to solve your problem. Of course if you would of heard about this a week ago it might have been better than to wait any longer. Good luck and let us know how it goes with whatever worked for you.

I have that problem often, LOL. I soak paper towels with water, lay them over the mess and let sit for awhile . Then I use them to wipe up softened grease and do it again if here's still a good bit left. After that I scrub the entire stove top with dollar store "steel wool" pads (with soap in them). Before the blue soap dries I wipe it off with more paper towels, rinse with wet paper towels. Same procedure for tough dried spills on the tile/linoleum floor.
