Concrete Garden Path

We made this garden walkway with a mold that we purchased at Lowe's. We mixed the Quickcrete up and then poured it into the mold a section at a time. It was almost like making mud pies. It was a bit time consuming but we were very happy with the end result. It has held up very well as it has been down now for about 3 years.

How many bags of concrete can you get outta one mold? A friend told me they used a bag per mold? This looks beautiful and I wanta try this....

well depending on the size of bag...but we used the regular size bag and I do believe it was one bag per one pour of mold.

It was about 1 bag per mold for the ones I made 3 years ago. I mixed a batch at a time in the wheelbarrow. To do my yard and garden paths I will rent a portable electric mixer. It will save time and save my back.

I made this same pathway about 3 yrs ago. Since we get lots of snow here in the mtns of NM, the pathway to my chicken coop was often very muddy and slippery. This project was an immense improvement! Because I am over 60 and had no one to help me, I mixed batches in a wheelbarrow and limited myself to only 2 sections a day. The path to the coop is about 100' long, so even though it took a while for me to complete the whole thing, it was well worth the work and it has held up pretty nicely ...»
with our severe weather changes. The only problem I've had is that the ground is not level in several places and some of the side stones have broken away because there is no support. Other than that, I am very happy with it. Being an artist, I wanted to experiment and make the stones a bit more interesting. I used some of those glass stones in different patterns on each section. I stuck some clam shells and sea shells in another section, interesting stones I had collected in another section and my handprint...along with some accidental kitty prints... on another. I even experimented by adding some "oops" paint on top of the stones before they were dry, which gave another interesting affect. Some of the objects I used have come off during the years because they probably weren't embedded deep enough, but I just use silicone glue to put them back on and that seems to work pretty good. I'm thinking of doing another pathway like this along the back of my house when I find the time. A portable mixer will definitely be used on this one!

I have a walk similar that was made years ago called 'crazy walk' made from a mold, and the path looks like mine, too, but I have ivy and ground cover, all wild. takes away from my roses, bleeding hearts, etc. should I just dig it all up transplanting the roses, etc? otherwise, I love this!! thanks for sharing..

I did a short walkway this way about 10 years ago. I made sure to cure it slow with plastic over it and spraying water on it everyday for I think 3 or 4 days. It is still going strong :) This one looks a whole lot better than mine. But it gives me great incentive. Thanks!

Love this and want to do one along my house. What kind of ground prep did you have to do? Did you have to put anykind of base down, like sand,

    first?

At the moment we are having a lot of rain. I'm thinking what a great time to put this pathway in when it stops. This is a lovely use of yard! Can't wait to start!

    Karen K.,

I am going to get started on my project soon, creating a patio with these molds. In your picture I can see grass growing up between the "stones" this is the look I am hoping to achieve. As I was researching this mold I thought there would be no cracks though. With your walkway, has the grass just naturally grown up , did you throw out some grass seed after, or did you lay it all down on grass?

    Thanks,

    Joy

Hi Joy. The grass just came up between the cracks. I really like the look of the grass between the cracks of the stones also. Have fun with it.

If only the concrete mix came in smaller, lighter packages. At my age (62, with 2 artificial knees), I just can't handle the weight.
