Stencil painting wall to wall carpet

I bought a house with high quality rugs, however very badly pet stained. I myself will be bringing in my four furry babies who constantly have accidents. So, how can I paint a print onto this beautiful turquoise colored rug that I love and hide the many brown and yellow stains? It has been professionally cleaned twice so the bacteria is gone, but it looks awfully bad. Help!
First professional cleaning
Second professional cleaning
Finished product. It's a big job and when all the dogs are one day gone I will replace them, but meanwhile how can I camouflage the stains?

I can see your dilemma, try a busy pattern! Linda

Genisis98, I am not sure where you live but there use to be a paint just for rugs. That was years ago. I think if you use a a good quality dye or Design Master Spray Paint and a stencile it might do the trick. You can purchase the paint at Micheal's Arts and Craft Store. B. Beamon Suffolk, VA

Genisis98 I just typed in How to paint carpet. If the pile of the carpet is fairly low pile you can use regular acrylic in door house paint. Type in how to paint carpet and you can see the blog. Hope this helps you. Gotta see a finished picture when you are done. Reminder the carpet will have a stiff feel to it once it dries . B Beamon, Suffolk, VA

Wall to wall can be dyed! Professional carpet cleaners can do this or you can try it yourself -(starting in an inconspicuous place). The dye used depends on type of fiber your carpet is constructed from. Purchases can be made on Amazon, Stuccu (makes dyes for leather, fabric, carpet). Hope this helps!

It is just my opinion, but if the pro cleaners can't get the stains out, it really is not worth doing anything to it. No matter what you do the stains will show, it would be a waste of time and money.

OzGirl, I have been in property for several years and replaced many, many carpets. I got a free sample of a carpet being painted. It was a mess! As for dog urine, however, cleaning it is hit or miss. Cat urine can never be removed. When carpets are replaced due to the cat odors, they must replace the tack strips, if bad enough you must treat the concrete before new carpet. Trust me... Remove the carpet

Rip it out and if the subfloor is concrete, stain the floor and get a few throw rugs that can be tossed in the washer. No pet worries.

Thanks for your idea, I would have but my dilemma is the fact that the rug is new, the color is beautiful and it is the best quality carpets I have ever seen. My first thought was to rip it out and polish the concrete floors with scatter rugs. I would only keep them for a few years till all the major renovations are completely done.

Thanks everyone for all the good suggestions, I just wanted to camouflage the stains for about a year, once all the home repairs, painting and mess is finished completely, then I will definitely replace it with something durable for years of pleasure! Thanks again for the ideas!

I'm afraid that you are going to throw your money away if/when you try to do anything with puppy stains...You could add room size rugs over the carpet and place your furniture so that the stains are less noticeable. If I had this situation to deal with, this is what I would do. Buy inexpensive "machine made" oriental design carpets and the "new" stains will be less obvious. Good luck!

Am I missing something? I do not see painted print on this rug.
  • Cass Cass on Jul 09, 2016
I agree. Toss it. Pet stuff goes all the way through and you would be wasting money on expensive paints. Backing on carpets can get very smelly and the padding too. Or keep it as is and then toss while you work around it to protect the subfloor, but don't throw good money to not so good. Tell everyone who visits to excuse the mess but you're under construction. Hmmm speaking of subfloor that could have become a bit dicey and smelly also if urine and whatever sunk all the way down.
  • Emily Emily on Jul 09, 2016
I agree with tossing the carpet. If the floor is concrete, you could use press and seal tiles, buying them at a discount store if you have one in your area. Or you could just buy a length of linoleum. I use a small piece in my computer room (sitting on it right now) it is a solid color and I "bordered" it in white 2" wide tape. Once I saw a great floor covering in a business property. It was plywood that had been scorched by a heat gun which in raising the grain made a very attractive design. With four pets you really need something you can clean easily. You could also paint the concrete/wood floor.

I would definitely get rid of the carpet. How about putting in hardwood floors?
  • Jeanne Martin Jeanne Martin on Jul 09, 2016
Maybe she can't afford to replace it. If you do remove the carpet I've seen a really cool treatment someone did on the plywood underneath using ripped up brown paper bags/kraft paper. It was similar to decoupaging the bits onto the floor. I saw it here on HT so you could find it I'm sure. It's am cheap fix and it looked great in the end! Polyurethane it all and you'd have an easy clean floor if your pets have accidents too.

I'm not sure the people here even saw the "after" picture. I think they just saw the "before" picture. It really doesn't look that bad, and it IS clean. If necessary, get a few area rugs for the worst places. If you haven't already, get your pets checked by the vet to see if something can't be done for their problem. There are many pet urine odor removers if you Google it, and some have a money-back guarantee. Also, don't give up until you've tried Folex carpet spot remover. It's cheap, easy to use, can work wonders, and they have it at Lowe's and Bed, Bath and Beyond. Personally, I could live with it a few years.

There are non-toxic paints and dyes for furniture that should work for carpet too. You can tape off a random pattern and spray over the stains.( paint would probably be the easiest) I have made door mats with this method and they held up for years. Good luck in whatever you decide to do.
  • CK CK on Jul 10, 2016
Put your furniture in place and see how many stains are still in the viewing area. You might find many of them aren't as noticeable once all the furniture is there.
  • Gen8336072 Gen8336072 on Jul 10, 2016
I probably will after I paint the whole place! Thanks!
  • Gen8336072 Gen8336072 on Jul 10, 2016
Well I was asking for advice about How to Do It. I am hoping someone can help me get it through a year or two if not more.
    • Kimberly O'Hara Kimberly O'Hara on Jul 11, 2016
I did a Google search. Several sites to go to. The paint you use is upholstery paint. Try looking at those sites. I also like the concrete idea. Then add throw rugs. Let us know what you choose.
  • Gen8336072 Gen8336072 on Jul 10, 2016
Yes, I have so many other things to spend money on, so I would rather not replace them just yet. Thanks for understanding why I would like to cover the stains with a stencil print because prints are coming back.... Thank goodness... I like your suggestion and this is a good idea I can consider. Thank you again for your kindness in creativity!
  • Gen8336072 Gen8336072 on Jul 10, 2016
Thank you so much Jennie for you sweet response. I found you suggestion valuable indeed because it worked so well I don't have to try to cover the mild stains that bear ly show. And the color is beautiful. Thanks very much! You really helped me out of such a pinch. Your a real sweetheart!

The woman we bought our house from had a cat that went everywhere. Our two cats (no medical problems) urinated everywhere to mark the territory as theirs, even after professional cleaning. You need a product like Kilz to put on the concrete or subfloor whenever you decide to take up the carpet. I'd really hate to see you spend lots of money on paint, throw rugs, etc. I know you don't want to, but I'd really ditch the carpet if I were you.
  • Gen8336072 Gen8336072 on Jul 11, 2016
Your right about that Connie and thank you! I was able to put a big chair over the worst stain. I just want it to look busy where you don't feel grossed out by the little stains. I love the color and high quality of the carpet and was hoping to save it for a few years. But now I'm thinking I might stencil a print that is a few shades darker. I haven't seen this pretty bight blue green color anywhere and now hate to part with it! LOL. It's nothing I would have picked on my own, but seeing it everyday made me realize I need to expand my horizons! I love this sight for that!
  • Gen8336072 Gen8336072 on Jul 11, 2016
I didn't know that cats also mark their territory? I have two boy dogs who won't stop doing that, I have belly bands on them so it's not an issue, but my two girl have started peeing when they are mad about the least little thing. I love them BUT! LOL... I will eventually pull up the carpet regardless of how good it is. The smell is gone, but so many stains remain. Thank you for your recommendation about Kliz, it sound like the perfect fix for my future. Thanks for your support with my problems!
  • Kari Roberts Kari Roberts on Jul 12, 2016
The carpet is very unhealthy for you and your animals to keep. I would pull up the carpet, clean and paint the sub floors, then stencil some designs on the painted floor.
  • Gen8336072 Gen8336072 on Jul 12, 2016
Your right and that was my very first thought. However the cleaning men did a superb job getting rid of all the bacteria and it is so plush and the color is brilliant. The stains are dark. Nevertheless thanks because you're idea is what I will do next👍

When we bought our house the living room carpet had fleas jumping out of it. We could see them. First thing we ripped out and replaced with affordable carpet. I wouldnt think of keeping the carpet in the photo.
    • Gen8336072 Gen8336072 on Jul 28, 2016
Believe me neither did I until I saw the top quality of this rug, of course it would be a temporary measure until all the renovations are completely finished then clean new good quality carpets will be installed for sure!
  • Kimberly O'Hara Kimberly O'Hara on Jul 26, 2016
Good, that was my idea as well. Much healthier and easy to clean.
