Repainting kitchen cabinets....

Shirley
by Shirley
Painted the cabinets 17 years ago and now I need to refresh them. I think that I would like a two-tone paint job but really unsure the color. I would like to keep the tops white, thought about black for bottom but thinking that might be a little dark. I have taken the brick down and put up a white back splash and will be putting trim on the doors to give them a shaker look (can you tell I'm going to retire at the end of this month? lol). This is one project on my bucket list after retiring.. I might add that the Kitchen opens to the family room which is painted Sage.... Sorry about the pics...best I could find and they were not staged (: Any suggestions would be appreciated!
U-shape kitchen - Walls are taupe....I would love to have a different light fixture, but DH NEEDS a fan!

Hi there! Your kitchen is light...floor is light, but the appliances are black. I think adding black to the bottom would make the space look to dark with the dark appliances. Keeping the top cabinets light color would look awesome. You already have a nice set up, and I love the glass doors. Perhaps another color on the bottom besides black.

That would look really nice Shirley, I can't wait to see what you do!

No offense but IMO what is dating the kitchen isn't the cabinet color as much as the countertop. If you're going to invest, I'd go for updated countertops and think about painting the cabinets a warmer neutral and change out the knobs and handles. Your country style is very nice and has beautiful colors...rich red, gold, black...I would certainly incorporate those in the color scheme. Search images on Pinterest for kitchens with chickens and see what comes up...you might find an inspiration kitchen to work off of

No offense taken! :) Thought about that but the cabinets themselves are 47 years old and I have some trepidation of putting nice new granite or quartz on top of those. If I were doing a full kitchen revamp with new cabinets it would be a no brainer, but, unfortunately, these cabinets are not wood, they are formica through and through. That seem to be the "thing" in that era and man do they stand the test of time! They just won't die and until they do, DH won't replace them! Thanks for the suggestion though.

If you are happy with the sage green in your other room, perhaps a similar color for the bottom cupboards would tie the two together. I definitely wouldn't go with black, with all your black appliances. It appears your valances have some sage in them so it would tie that in also. Good luck and be sure to post finished pics when you are done. Congrats on your retirement, too.

Ann, NEVER thought of using the sage color! I still have a supply of that, now I'm thinking that I could lighten it up with white (making sure of course that I have enough to finish the job). The more I think of it, the better I like it! I have other things that I am going to do to that room. Thanks for the suggestion!!

I just looked thru your photos again, and wondered if you could paint the spaces between the shelves behind your beautiful plate collection in the sage color too. Just an idea.

That could be a possibiity... Maybe the addition of a back to the shelving unit. I made that, and after it sat in the basement,(for a while) decided to stain it and throw it up on the wall sans the backing...maybe some painted bead board? or ?
  • Ann Ann on Jul 13, 2016
Exactly! Wow! You made that? Yes some sage colored beadboard would bring the color over to that side of the room. Oh I'm so anxious to see what you do.

I have the same black appliances and my cabinets are white on top and gray on the bottom. Really like that.

If you do black I would do top, bottom cabinets on frig., stove, microwave wall , topAND bottom. Then do all others the pale sage or a tan lighter than countertops. Perhaps clear glass pulls, knobs or shiny chrome .

I think painting the drawers and the center of the cabinet doors in black with the rest white would be a nice two tone approach. Black and white go with any color, so a sage color would be fine. My other suggestion is painting the recessed areas of the cabinets and drawers black color. Perhaps sage green with some black premade stencil designs on doors and drawers. Then a clear poly coat over it to make it blend with the fridge and dishwasher. Either way, the black and white design is happening right now.

I love the two tone cabinet idea and I'm contemplating it myself. How about a light gray with green undertone for bottom cabinet to pull in the sage?

I think a new coat of white paint, new hardware and paint the walls a sage green and change the curtains, those are for taller windows or a bedrooms and are country looking. Add a mock Roman shade on all the windows and add a color rug under the kitchen table in sage, black etc
