Side Yard Makeover

Last year I decided to give our neglected side yard a little makeover. It was overgrown and looking pretty sad. Since visitors enter our backyard through this path, I wanted it to stand out.
I had a pretty paver walkway already in place, but it was overgrown with weeds. There was also a clematis vine that had grown so big and heavy that the trellis toppled over. So I got to work ripping everything out, as you can see below.
The trellis was originally centered in the space, but I moved it to the back so I could tie it to the fence for extra support. I was careful to dig up the vine from the roots and replant it. I had no idea if it would take in the new spot or not, but I was hopeful.
Luckily, the clematis vine came back strong. In the center, I added a garden obelisk. In small outdoor spaces (as well as indoor spaces) it helps to go vertical. I filled in the rest with a daylily plant, two heucheras, and a hosta. Lastly I added a hydrangea, because you can never have enough hydrangeas.
Here is the difference, only one year later! Stop by my blog to see the rest of my gardens as part of a blogger's garden hop.
