Wall was moved back to expand living room but flooring had stopped. Now we have a 2 x 4's filling floor area. What can be done? Don't want to refinish floors until we fix this first.

Not easy to be done.. I have done this several times , as a specialist in floring . If possible you need to take out a big part of the floor but you also need new and the same planks .... It is taking more time to explain everything here

stain the 2x4s to match or use a planer to plane down the 2x4s this is now your subfloor. buy matching flooring and install

YOU CAN ALWAYS CREATE AN ACCENT. NO NEED TO MATCH JUST A LITTLE CONVERSATION POINT

I agree, some sort of decorative inlay maybe, either wood or tile. That's what I'd do.

I have patched many floors when I worked as a remodeler/ handyman. I would look in closets for matching flooring and remove what I needed for the patch. If none was available, I'd buy similar unfinished flooring at the big box store. The process I used is called weaving the new flooring into the old to create an unnoticeable patch. Thank You William we will look for an experienced floor guy that's reasonably priced. We afraid of a costly project and with allergies and dogs we don't want carpet.

Thank You Chris aka monkey. I was considering a white wash floor and change my theme to a beach/coastal theme since we are going to be working from scratch.

And my husband thought I was crazy for taking the hardwoods under our kitchen cabinets! This is why I did it!

Have a flooring guy come in and "weave" the new floor into the old. It's easy and fast if you know what you're doing. Then, stain to match, and you'll never see the difference between the new and the old. It's the least expensive way to go if you get an experienced flooring guy.

I agree with others who have recommended using it as an accent piece, by using stain or some kind of inlay. You don't have to rip apart the whole floor, and it will give your room some extra "character".

So I would just go with it..,maybe do a tile inlay, or even stain the wood differently, perhaps a red wash instead of paint or stain. Weaving is going to cost a lot.

I think your on the right track, getting a good floor pro in to weave the new and old . Good luck with the reno's

Either have someone weave the flooring or if you go with the patch as an accent, have a professional insert the "trim", the same distance from the wall around the room. I removed a closet and had no flooring there. It was in the hall so I had a professional ran a board perpendicular to the existing floor in line with the top of our stair and fill in the missing floor. The man who did it asked if he could use "my solutions" when he had another problem like ours. It turned out great.

My flooring guy was able to weave about 20-feet in well under an hour. Brasilians work fast and cheap and do an amazing job. Even with the sanding, staining and poly, the whole job cost about $650 including materials (white oak.)
