@Pam - I just wondered because we have a lilac that is like a small tree! Just like so many other plants, maybe there is a small & large species!! Anyhoooo - what ever it is and whatever you're doing - it's working!! -
A small tree! Oh my, could you post a picture? I'm going to have to relocate this before it gets that size...thanks Susan S. -
Well Pam, like I said - there might be a couple different varieties so perhaps yours is considered a dwarf and will be just fine where it is. I also need to move mine simply because I don't think it's getting enought sun now. Our tree line seems to be encroaching ever closer so I don't think it's getting what it needs. This year I noticed we didn't have nearly as many blooms as in the past!! I'll see if I can get a good shot for you but but it looks kind of scraggly to me now. -
your hydrangea is to close also -
This weekend I am going to put them in the corner of my backyard with the lilies by themselves. How far apart do they need to be from each other and the fence? Thanks! -
@ Douglas Hunt & Judy V, could I trim the nandinas back for the hydrangeas to have more space or relocate them? -
@ Susan S. I'm thinking of planting them in my backyard along with my hydrangeas would 2 feet apart be enough space? Thanks you all for being totally honest with me. -
I do know hydrangeas have a pretty wide spread once they get going. I'd leave the lilac for now because it looks like it's pretty happy where it is. If it is a dwarf variety then you shouldn't have to worry about it outgrowing the space it's in. We had to move our hydrangeas about 3 yrs ago and they are just this year getting lots of bloom on them again. They really get an attitude when moved and it took mine a while to get reestablished. Just sayin . . . . . Sometimes gardening is more trial & error than perfect results, at first!! -
@Pamela: You'll be constantly pruning them. I would move them (they're too close to your house, too) and plant them so no closer than 3 feet apart, 4 would probably be better. One of the biggest challenges gardeners face is allowing for the mature size of plants because we want our gardens to look full all the time. The best way to achieve that is to plant annuals between your perennials or shrubs, replacing fewer and fewer of them as your perennials grow. -
Thanks so much...I'm on it this weekend. -
You have a beautiful garden. I too wonder about your spacing as your hydrangeas seem crowded....mine is young and gets about 3' tall and about 5' wide!!! These are not small bushes. I have seen mature ones get 5'+ tall and about the size of a smart car! Georgia climate encourages large growth! But enjoy them this year and move them later on. -
PS...for a city girl you are taking to gardening like a pro!! Keep loving it! -
5ftX5ft good spacing for hydrangeas -
Thanks, I'm on it as we speak. My husband went to buy two more and we are going to put all four in the backyard 5 feet away from the fence and 5 feet away from each. Thank you all. I really don't enjoy my backyard that much but with these beauties back there, I soon shall:-) Pictures soon to come but not til the rain stops and hubby cuts the grass, lol! -
You have a great eye for putting plants together. -
Thank you:-D -
Pamela...you might want to wait until later in the fall to move your bushes....it is so hot that there will be a lot of stress moving them now. Wait until it cools off... this is coming from experience, I did the same thing at the start of my gardening career!!! They won't grow that much between now and then! Plus it will be easier on you too! Where is Hinesville? I live in Lower Alabama and it is HOT right now!!! You also might want to have an odd number of bushes ...» -
@ Victoria S, I moved them yesterday in an area that definitely gets more shade than sun in my backyard. I also planted (3) that are 5 feet by 4 feet from each and the fence. I planted (1) in the other corner 4 feet by 3 feet away from fence and other shrubs. They were a bit wilted yesterday but when I went to check in on them, they were perky as ever. I've taken a photo of each...thanks so much. -

Pamela...they look so nice!!! You are going to have a wonderful bed by your fence!!! -
I hope so! As someone stated prior, I do love full beds. Seeing this one kind of empty gets to me. But, the end result should be pleasing to the eyes while setting an example within my community! Out of 120 duplexes, there's about 3 of us that utilizes the flowerbeds under the windows and have gardens in the backyards. Although, I have the largest variety of shrubs and plants:-D I'd like to point out that the majority has better grass, lol which we will be working on next year! -
Love it great job -
you did a great job,it's going to be beautiful -
Thanks Judy. This is an awesome site. I'm glad that Walter Reeves advised me to join. You all are great helpers and I wish that you were here to do the labor, lol! -
Pamela, you have a beautiful yard. So many healthy plants.
