An Envisioned Walnut Sideboard

William Heistand
by William Heistand
One hundred years ago, sideboards, buffets or credenzas were the traditional places to store the accessories and serve for dining and entertaining. They are a functional furniture that range from the modest to the very extravagant design.
Tasked with reproducing a sideboard in the Stickley style for use in a home library, I began with the necessary changes to proportion that would accommodate the intended space and purposed use. Reproduction hardware from the period, designed by C. R. Mackintosh, influenced the shaped walnut embellishment for the cabinet doors. The subtle combination of these choices has resulted in a comfortable conversation between the design elements. Now residing in a library environment, this sideboard is handsomely storing the accessories for study, serving up a glass of wine with a good book.
