REcreating a Time-consuming Wreath

This post is not just about making a Christmas wreath for your front door! It's about REmaking the same wreath after a disaster! Read on, and I'll show you what I mean.
First I selected two colors of ribbon that I wanted to use. (Hindsite: don't use ribbon with holes punched in it.) I began cutting the ribbon into squares as long as the ribbon was wide. (about 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" wide. ) These do not have to be perfect lengths or straight cuts.
I cut a post card "pattern" for the width.
I couldn't wait to get started on the 'Real' wreath so when I got a short stack cut, I started the punching. (Hindsite: This would be a good time to choose a place for a ribbon or wire hanger. Once the form is covered, it is hard to hold it by the completed sides.
You should punch all of one color first and go back to add in the second color in any thin spots. Just punch the center of a square with small dowel stick or unsharpened pencil into an area of the Styrofoam form.
Continue adding ribbon squares until you are happy with the look.
Now choose a bow! I am still deciding on this one.
Both bow choices seem to need some green!
THEN ... THIS HAPPENED! The wreath fell of the small hook, hit the floor and broke into four pieces!! This had taken me hours to complete! So, I was NOT willing to lose it! I grabbed some carpenter's wood glue and held two pieces together until they would stay. I put them carefully aside to finish drying and glued two other sides, holding them together until they set. I glued any ribbon squares that fell off back into place with Elmer's glue. I allowed everything to dry overnight and finished the last of the circle the next morning!
Then I drew a circle around the wreath and cut it out about 1/2 inch smaller than the wreath. I glued the back of the wreath onto the white cardboard piece just to strengthen the circle. I now do THIS step BEFORE I start a project with a Styrofoam form. I cut out a circle smaller than the Styrofoam form and then cut out the center of the circle so that the back is smaller than the back of the actual wreath. This strengthens the form before I even begin my project.
Suggested materials:
  • A 12" styrofoam wreath form   (Walmart or Hobby Lobby)
  • Two 10 foot rolls of ribbon (I used wire edged.)
