what about rust?

All these beautiful designs in washtubs, mailboxes, and assorted metal containers-do y'all coat them with something first or drill drainage holes in them. What keeps them from rusting or do you not worry about that? Are there any precautions or concerns when planting food in them?

I spray a clear spray and do add drainage holes to my yard art. But after a few years i decided to just let it age.
