Prevent door bottoms from rotting or rusting by installing a drip edge.

A standard door bottom drip edge can easily be cut and attached to the bottom of a door, blending in after caulking and painting. Most exposed doors rot or rust from the bottom because the bottom edge cannot be protected. The drip edge keeps the water from curling under the door, instead allowing it to drip onto the threshold.

The new drip edge primed, installed and caulked to the door. Like most exposed metal doors, rust was beginning to form on the face from the bottom.

After painting, the drip edge looks like part of the door.

This is so funny! I noticed the grooves cut into the edging on the door. Since watching a segment of "This old House" I understand the things they do to manage water! They put in a new wooden sill in a window of a house over 100 years old. The last thing they did was cut a groove on the underside about 1/3 of the way from the front. It seems that when water comes to that groove, it breaks the surface that makes it drip off instead of continuing on is path to seap inside the wall! In essence, it changes the course of the water! Amazing!

got a metal door that has been rusting with the rain/moisture...how do you rebuild the door and paint it. I hope to replace the door and walls of the room, but until then, how do you fix the rusting and paint job?

    Thanks Becky.

To repair a rusty door, sand the loose rust off, clean and spot prime the rusty area with a rustoleum type primer. If there are rusty holes, apply Bondo paste after the primer, then sand and prime the Bondo.

To paint, go to a good paint store and purchase acrylic metal paint and apply it in the cool of the day with a good brush.

    Best, Charles
