Upcycled Vertical Succulent Garden

Using an old window frame I made a vertical succulent garden. I stapled hardware cloth to the window frame. Then we added a piece of plywood to the back. Black dirt was added next and various kinds of succulents. It will take about a month to fill in. This will come back every year. You can find a step by step tutorial on my blog. Happy Gardening!
Time: 4 Hours Cost: $40.00 Difficulty: Moderate

I love this. HGTV had one on an expensive Beverly Hills house for sale that was valued in the thousands- it was larger. When I was in Italy, there was a slanted succulent garden on a roof that was done as a painting or mosaic. I will have to see if I can find a picture.

I love, love, love succulents - by far my favorite plant. I'm guessing in MI you transport indoors for winter, correct? I'm a fellow Michiganian. We have a year round outdoor prickly pear in our garden, but I'm guessing these would not make it. Am I correct?

I just put my old window frame out to the curb for bulk pick up, it is a 6 window pane, and one broke, maybe I should take it back?????????

I like this idea a lot. Very pretty. I have a lot of succlents the colored ones are my favorite. The pink, bluish, and lavender are so pretty.

There is a junk/ antique store not far from me and they have all kinds of stuff. I'm thinking it would be really neat to set it on the ground that has been covered with compost and plant different colors and sizes of lettuce in each opening. I have a large pot that I planted with mixed ...»

different lettuces growing. I just take a bowl outside and pinch off leaves till I have enough for a salad. New leaves will grow back and I don't have to plant more seeds for more lettuce.

This is giving me a bit of hope. Am up in snowy Toronto and just wishing that it would be gardening weather soon. Sigh. Maybe in April, sometime. Thanks for the great idea. : )

Jen R- all the succulents I have a hardy and never have a problem with snow. I see you're from Lansing, I'm in Traverse City. NO issues with them dying.

Linda H- That is an incredible idea. I'm gonna have to mull that idea over.

Terry S, I'd love to see your succulents as well but pretty sure they wouldn't be winter hardy if you are in FL. My mom who is from FL gave me some starts and they didn't make it through the ...»

    frost.

Elayne B Spring will be here soon!!! At least that's what I'm clinging to as well.

Thanks for all your nice comments. Have a GREAT night!
