What are some good ideas to make a garden in a small backyard? Would love to hear what can be done.

    Stephanie,

Make small beds as these are easier to maintain. Also containers stacked in landscape shelves and structures make a small garden look more lush. i would suggest you have a little of everything. Perennials, Annuals and evergreens. Some fruit plants and flowers in containers. You can also do a container pond.

How about placing containers? and you can move them around . Any corner or

strip of ground can be a garden. don't just plant in a straight line, curved walkways and paths that lead along rounded planter beds create the illusion of more space from one area to the next

Thank you all for the advise. This is something I wish to do on my own and not have to pay someone to do it.

Stephanie, There is always great pleasure in doing things yourself at home, the thrill of seeing flowers bloom after a hard day planting the babies. i hear and feel you. Adding to what I already said before, keep a folder and add pictures and inspirations like landscape features, plants, and ideas you gather from books and magazines. You can also host a landscape party for your friends where you all can plant a container or just talk about ideas. Let them give you plants as gifts to start off. Good Luck!

Do anyone know if you add egg shells to compost?

Yes, you can add egg shells to compost. My aunt always crushed egg shells and sprinkled them around her rose bushes so i am sure it is safe.
