The simple answer is "what ever goes better with your decor." However, these days stainless steel is a bit more popular. If you have ideas of selling your home in the near future, I'd go with the stainless steel.
I upgraded to Stainless, but it is any but stainless. I know they are all the rage, but my experience has been that they are an maintanence nightmare. Even clean water drips from the on the door water dispenser leave a stain. Is black an option? You might want to consider it, or be warned you will be polishing those appliances on a daily basis to keep them looking nice.
Stainless it all the rage right now. But I agree with Donna on keeping it clean. Some stainless however does clean eaisier then others. Depends on stainless finish and quality.
If your going to sell stainless is way to go as Dan' s said.
In our home we have colored appliances, not white at that color is also hard to keep clean.
You can always go the insert panel appliance look to match the cabinets of the room. Expensive but another way to get around your decor concerns.
Stainless Fridge note: I learned when I last bought a refrigerator that all of the stainless fridges were "stainless steel look" (at least in my sub-$1200 price range). The way to tell? Bring a magnet. It won't stick to a "stainless plated" surface. This is important if you stick your life in living color with magnets on every inch of your fridge like we do. We ended up with a supposed titanium finish on an LG model to get actual metal... looks like stainless to me!
