The Trouble With Cats and The Making Of A Pickle Juice Chair

You may be wondering what on earth this title and the items pictured below could possibly have to do with a DIY furniture project. But this is not a typical project even by my crazy standards.
The only reason that this project came about is due to these two fur balls.
We have only had them for a few months but they have managed to weasel their way into our hearts which is a good thing since they have also done this to our living room chairs.
They are not particularly expensive chairs but I decided to try and salvage them anyway. My problem was finding something to recover the chairs with that would not look terrible if the cats got their claws into it.
Maybe this was a strange conclusion but I decided to use twine. The question was how to attach the twine to the chair. After a fair amount of searching and almost giving up I found a simple DIY glue recipe on line. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fj4y2BcCrtQ
I decided to give it a try and much to my surprise it seemed to work! It took me several days to cover the entire chair.
Once the whole chair was covered and had dried it needed a lot of sanding to take down the rough edges. The final step was a coat of Minwax Polycrylic.
All in all I am pretty happy with how it turned out.

I LOVE this chair! It looks awesome! I would do this with something that isn't torn up just to have it! After the sanding and clear coating, would you sit in the chair for any length of time comfortably? Also just curious are the cats using it as a scratching post? Again love this and you did a great job!

I used to do macramé but lately the stores never have the jute. Where did you find it?

What does the chair feel like to touch it? Is it hard and smooth or scratchy? And is it comfortable? Other than that your idea was genius!

I have scratch posts all over the house, I have 4 cats. They still will find something that is not a scratching post to scratch on. If you love them, you tend to overlook this. My guys give me companship and love.

Cats can be trained not to scratch furniture. A squirt gun filled with water is great for this, as is loudly yelling "NO" when they scratch something you don't want them to. You can still enjoy their companionship and love without them destroying your possessions.

They will just wait until you and the squirt gun are out of the room. When you own cats, you just assume they will destroy things, but you love them anyway.
