flagstone patio with stonedust

We got this flagstone from a property being cleared (with permission). There was enough to do a patio off the deck and a pond with a patio. Here is the finish. That is polymeric sand in the joints. Now it needs to be sealed, wet look or just a glaze? We are not sure. What is best? We did the flagstone pond w/ patio last summer. That is stone dust in between the joints at the pond.

Pond & flagstone patio finished. The pond is 9x16 and we needed an excavation machine to dig it out. So he dug and graded it for me and I did the building.

Kingscape...if you don't like the look of cement, what is best to use? My son-in-law has tried various methods with no luck, and doesn't want to sell the house to fix the patio~

You can use crushed rock, Crushed Granite composite works great,

You can use stepable plants as well, ask your nursery. They can give you lots of great ideas! What I don't like about concrete is that it can pull away from the flagstone, then it looks ugly. Using plants will keep the natural look and they can cover any flaws.

Your hard work and success in creating such a beautiful and valuable addition to your property is inspiring me to tackle the project I have been dreaming about but putting off for years.

Round up leaches into our water supply (drinking water) please rethink using it.I prefer a few weeds to contaminated water. RU will also kill most plant life where ever you use it...other than that your patio is beautiful and artfully done.

Thank You for the info on The Round Up for patio areas. I did put the weed mesh under our walk, but the second year weeds grew right through it! I will look at Lowes for the special Round Up!!

Jane, you have MY respect (for what that's worth). You've tackled back breaking work and turned out a beautifully finished project that will be enjoyed for decades! I love that you've been able to secure the vast amount of materials for free; that's spectacular! Glad to see the use of polymeric sand; I used that w/my flagstone for the reason that it perks water..........which cement will not do. In the county and state that I live in, we're taxed on every sq. ft. of nonporous ...»
surfaces. Additionally, I hate to think some tree roots would be deprived of their water. Beautiful job, through and through.

The advantage of laying flagstone on a stone base is that it will not crack from freeze/thaw cycles (if that is an issue in your area). One note on the polymeric sand- it does not tolerate wet conditions as it cannot cure. If the flagstone is laid on stone dust, it will probably fail within a few years as stone dust retains moisture. We install flagstone over washed concrete sand, which provides drainage. There is a polymeric sand that is more tolerant of wet conditions, it is called GatorMaxx. But the maximum joint width is 1.5".

In our previous landscape (done in 1999 by previous owners) they had a stone path - mostly bluestone - well nobody used that path - so I moved it - there is still some left - so I will be pulling all that out this fall, and hopefully repurposing it all!!

re. killing weeds...instead of using strong chemicals like Round Up (which is a known hormone disruptor and will eventually wind up in our water supply), try using distilled white vinegar in a spray bottle...just saturate the weeds and they'll be on their way to weed heaven...a hot sunny day will hasten their demise. Just remember that it (like other chemicals) will kill anything it touches, so be careful of over spray.

Did you look up "free" on Craigs List or just happen upon the free stones being given away?

Here's my story. We inherited a 1924 bungalow that still had it's original concrete driveway, narrowly poured but thick for the cars of the time. We had to pull (read "jackhammer') it out. Too many cracks. It was tossed behind the original garage and left to collect for several years. By that time. the old garage roof needed repair. So to keep my roof-fixing husband company, I started sorting out the concrete chunks. ...»

I went on auto-pilot and started stacking them in tiers filling the layers with the gardening cuttings (by then compost). By the time I had reached the third layer (and exhaustion), I stood back and admired that order I had created out of a messy pile.... I was amazed! I had no prior plan and it then called me to place a pond and waterfall, maybe some ferns and of course flowers.

Next day, (Keep in mind I was pushing 60), I found a preformed fiberglass Pond, kidney shaped, and two flowing fiberglass pieces (left over from a floral display I had done for the State Fair). So digging and reshaping some of concrete to accommodate the flow pieces I created an amazing pond. Yes I had a pump too, found under garage junk. Had to SMILE, I made something amazing out of trash. And it cost me $18. for some plants. Ferns came from neighbors backyard. I did it ALL by myself!

Who said you've got to have a plan to go by... Sometimes flying by the seat of your pants, the willingness to change a few rocks and NOT listening to hubby "saying you can't do that" (ignored of course), can create something out of Nothing.

Flagstones are by far are lovelier but I had the old concrete Chunks to use. So I did with the rocky sides out. And to me, it wasn't mission impossible.

The day after I had a flagstone path put down a mole came right through the center of the path. I then had to have the stones lifted and re-laid to have them set in concrete. No mole problem now, but expensive to correct.
