Brick Bat Fire Pit. Getting Inspiration for My Garden From Our Travels

We were inspired to build a brick bat fire pit after vacationing to Williamsburg, Virginia. Whenever we travel I look for ideas that I can incorporate into my gardens. Hoping to build an English knot garden someday.
An area was leveled and weed guard put in place. Then we put in 4 inches of crushed gravel which was compacted. Afterwards a 2" bed of sand was put on top.
Brick, both whole and bits and pieces that I gathered from 4 sources was tapped into the sand. Also threw in a piece of flagstone here and there. Use a level to keep bricks level.
We filled it up 3/4 of the way with sand. The last 1/4 we used polymer sand. This hardens slightly and helps prevent weeds. It was swept in with a broom. This process was repeated a few times allowing for settling.

Wiktionary defines brickbat as: "A piece of brick used as a weapon, especially if thrown, or placed in something like a sock and used as a club."

Martha, this makes sense. I bet that is how they got their name. The early settlers had to use what they had so broken bricks made their way into lots of paths and stoops. We saw lots of them in Williamsburg and I feel head over heels in love! We didn't use just broken bricks, but mixed whole ones in also.
