Need Inspiration for a Fireplace Redo

I am getting ready to repaint my house, and there are two "features" in the living room I really would like to improve upon, and I want to do it before we paint. Our fireplace is ventless, and the builder put the entire firebox inside the structure of the house, so the firebox is nearly 2 feet deep, and it just looks like a giant box wasvplopped down in my living room. The wall to the right of the fireplace is a halfwall, and then has this odd glass shelving thing at the end of it, with furring strips holding the glass up. I'd like to do something to make both of these eyesores more appealing, and add some real storage to the room. I've thought about cabinetry, shelving, and even a false chimney. I could really use some inspiration, I've been staring at this for a year, and still haven't come to a resolution. I am pretty sure the TV is going up on the wall above the fireplace, instead of sitting on it like it is now.
Boxy, boring fireplace. :(
Cheesy glass shelving between living and dining rooms.

Hello Cori: I have attached a picture of a drawing showing you an option to address the fireplace. As far as the shelving problem I think that I would go with wooden shelves matched to the trim color.

I'd hang the two leaded glass windows lengthwise from that beam-like structure. You'd still get the light and view into the living room and maybe it would tie in that glass shelf. I'd also add shelving or cabinets on each side of the fireplace which would "push it back" some and maybe re-think the front. Someone suggested adding wood - good idea!
