Removing Carpet from Stairs and Painting Them

Earlier last week I decided to rip the carpet off of my stairs and paint them. Here is my progress so far. Still have a lot of the finish work to do i.e Install moulding, board and batten and paint. Will keep you posted.

Susan, you crack me up. I did actually wait until my husband was on a business trip. He comes home this Friday and has no idea I did this yet. We kindof have an agreement that I get to do what I want as long as I don't involve him. he he. He is not much of a handy man. This was/is a big project, but so far absolutely worth it. I used Behr Floor and Patio Paint in Jet black. It was really dull after I applied it, so I mixed it with Behr Hi Gloss Acrylic Latex Paint. It is not slippery at ...»
all, even with socks, but is taking a little getting use to. (I have had carpet on stairs my whole life). The staples and nails were the worst part, but even that was only a few hours of work. In Arizona we have pretty cookie cutter houses, so I am probably making the job bigger then it has to be by adding stair moulding, crown, base etc.. The hardest part for me has been keeping my kids off of the stairs to allow time for the paint to cure (3 days as per the can). I think you should go for it.

i want to do this too but my husband refuses to even consider it. the carpet is so nasty and dirty and the stairs and spare room are the ONLY room left w/carpet! Teri- it looks amazing! let me know how it holds up to wear and tear.

@Susan S and Melissa W. Just start rippin the carpet up. I also did mine when my husband was on a trip :) I've slid down the stairs more with the carpet than without. I have put tread runners down for now. They help all of us with traction. I'll post our progress, so far, pictures Sunday. Ladies, send him for a guys weekend or a double header baseball game. Given the chance to get out for a weekend without you wanting him to do something might be just the bait needed.

@Kelly S & Yvonne E - well mine went and retired so now he's underfoot 24/7 except when he's at his part time job and that's only 6 hrs, 3-4 days a week. I can't work that fast!! But, I'm bettin I sure could tear up a heck of a lotta carpet in 6 hrs and what could he do to me then?? lol For sure I know he CANNOT afford to divorce me!!

Sooooo, Kelly, how about we sent our respective husbands away together to do some fishin or something???? Cross country - yeah right!!!

****** @Teri U - mostly!! I tried to post this right after your last one and for some reason it would accept my reply. Being "smart" sometimes I C&P'd and put it in Word - then I had to log out/in ande recopy & paste. Good grief - so . . . .here's the REST OF THE STORY!! lol

WELCOME HOME HONEY!!! SURPRISE - GUESS WHAT I DID??

You have to let us know what he says - OK?? ...»

Ah - thank you Darlin!! I must say all my HT friends have been super supportative - or else they just really want to see me in real deep doo doo!! But, I'm sure they have my best interests at heart and are all very sincere!! That's why I love this site sooo much!!

As to adding the trims, mouldings etc. - hey that adds value to your home and certainly dresses it up. Thats the beauty of your own home is that you can do as you darned well please!! My granddaughter lives w/us but will be spending most of the summer @her mom's and will be back & forth so no worries w/sm children. The pets - that's another story. Our sheltie is too heavy for either of us to carry him up & down and cats will always go where they want when they want. I will probably do every other step and even at that may have to do half way across - let it dry and do the other half. But how do I tell the dog stay to the left!! LOL

Deep breath - I'm going to have to do this - right after I do the tire planters and a whole list of other things on my "ROUND 'TUIT "LIST!!

I THOUGHT I sent you an invitation to join my network - did you get it or am I confused??

Teri U. this is the most thorough job I've seen done lately. It's exciting to find someone with an eye for detail/finish. You could have let some of the problems go or covered them up too, but you chose to correct them. This is the difference between a "good" job and excellence! Excellent job Teri!

AND.....I thought I was unique in the fact that I always capitalized on my husband's business ...»

trips to do large jobs; now I find it must be a "female" trait. Hot dog, I'm in good company. Susan, I can relate to the retired husband putting a dent into the agenda.

Broke down and told my husband about this project and to my surprise he was excited. His only imput was that he wants me to install a carpet runner. Should have more pictures to upload tomorrow of some of the mouldings that I have installed. Thank you all for the encouraging comments.

@Teri....Yeah unless he's planning to Vaccuum I wouldn't dream of marring your beautiful work with a carpet runner!!!!! That is just a fabulous look! The ONLY thing I might add is some stenciled patterns on the white....they sell quilters stencils at Hancock fabrics and if you use the black on the white it would look very modern. Maybe every other one... Or two on one and only one on the next... Love Love Love this look! You should pat yourself on the back big time!

Hey, @Teri U Guess what I found in my DIY Crafting folder? A photo of stair back boards that were stenciled! i think theirs were supposed to be "whimsical" but yours with all the B&W would be a lot more dramatic...anyway thought of you when i ran across it again so thought I'd post it...LOL

@Susan S, It took me less than 2 hours to rip up the carpet and padding, bag it, and toss it in the bed of my truck. The dang tack strips and all the staples took the rest of the day! That's why girls should have trucks. Someplace to hide the evidence lol :)

hi teri-I ripped up the carpet 7 years ago and found beautiful wood under it but it was too slippery for my little dog. So, then I put on carpet treads. hate them. So now I want to paint but I fear they will be too slippery for George, my shitzu. Since you say your paint combo isn't slippery, I'll try it. I'm a 65 year old who loves home improvement. My house was built the year I was born! I love it.

@Kelly S - weeeeeelllll - we have a p/u truck WITH a cover - I could hide the carpet in there for a long time. He doesn't use the truck too much these days - 12 mpg and a dead insp. sticker!!! I think we've just become partners in crime!!! lol

We call mine the rolling dumpster. It has a canopy so even the destruction debris stays fairly dry. Dry is easier to get out of the truck at the dump than wet. Lesson learned the hard way lol.
