4 DIY Uses for Puppy Pads

For some reason, I (Vicki) had a box of puppy pads at my house. I probably got them at a yard sale with the thought of using them in some way. Well, use them I have, and none of them involve a puppy!

In the Kitchen:

UPDATE: We have been getting a lot of comments about the puppy pads not being food safe. I have been trying to find out if this is true or not. I've email the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to get their take on the safety issue. I'll let you know what they say. In the meantime, if you're uncomfortable, I would NOT use this first tip. When I used this, I didn't actually put the meat on the pad, but opened the package and allowed the meat juices to drain and absorb into the pad. By doing this the counter stays clean and germ free. This has got to be the best non-puppy use ever! I’ve always struggled to contain the mess from opening fresh meat packages. On the 4th of July I was prepping ribs and dreading the thought of how to contain all the “juices.” Inspiration struck and I thought, “puppy pads would absorb the mess AND keep the counter clean." Out to the garage I went to get one, spread it on the counter, opened the package of ribs, AND, it worked perfectly! No mess, no counter clean-up, just gather up the used pad and toss it in the trash! It worked for bagged chicken also!

In the Garage:

Puppy pads work as a mini waterproof drop cloth for small messy, leak prone projects like painting or staining. Bonus, I found I could pour a little mineral spirits on the pad to dip and wipe small paintbrushes to clean them of solvent based paints/stains.

In the Craft Room:

Just like in the garage, puppy pads are great to use underneath painting and glueing projects. If you use your dining room table as a work surface, like me, it will protect it from potential damage.

In the Playroom:

My grandkids LOVE to do science experiments with Oma, which usually means spraying vinegar on baking soda under which is hidden food coloring. A puppy pad keeps all the overflow vinegar/food coloring mess absorbed, the table protected, and it makes clean-up a breeze. I guess you could always tuck one into the shirt of your 3 year old grandson to contain the mess that ends up on his shirt too!

I have a package of them that I bought for my puppy. She can’t aim well enough go for them to be effective for their purpose, so these ideas are great.

The question of using them for food might be valid. I know mine are scented to attract the dog. They smell like lavender, but who knows what’s in them? If you have something between it and the food, it’s a fantastic idea.

When we first posted this, I tried very hard to find out what is in them, but could find nothing. I don't put food directly on them but use them mainly in the kitchen to cut open packages of meat so that the juices run into the pad rather than onto the countertop. It makes clean up a breeze.

I actually started buying these to help protect a car passenger seat & (eventually)mattress from leaks/stains for someone who was incontinent. (They were also wearing adult diapers, but this was added protection.)

Could also be easy to pack for travel when you have kids that are still prone to nighttime accidents.

Currently, I have a cat who occasionally decides not to use the litter boxes, & I began laying these in their corner of choice. Then added yet another litter box on top. It has helped quite a bit.

All smart uses for these. We use them all the time in the garage. It makes clean up so much easier! ~Vicki
