Millstone fountain

This is my second fountain in my shade garden. It is made from an old millstone that has a tub underneath. The gazing ball in the background sits on an old tree stump that was retrieved from a river and left to dry a year before we drilled up the center of it for electrical so we could make the gazing ball glow at night.

@ Leida I just don't know about drilling a hole through something like that....you'd want a 3/4" hole I would think....and a masonary drill bit that size would be kind of pricy I bet....

Sharon, I see. My husband did the holes on my 2 stepping stones himself with a drill, and it really wasn't that difficult.

Leida, it can't hurt to try! I've got some here that are not currently being used, they aren't large but if it works I can buy a bigger one...LOL

I keep coming back to this fountain. Would I need electricity to run the fountain? I need to know how the water is powered.

Hi Nancy ~ Yes there is a pump in the bottom of the underground tub. For the first few years I just buried an outdoor extension cord until my husband chopped it in half digging out tree roots. After that he ran proper underground wiring and there is a box hidden under an old chicken feeder cover that is large enough to house an outdoor receptacle, a timer for my gazing ball lights and remote control for the fountain. Hope this helps...

So I need a regular outside covered plug for my paradise. Thanks Julee. Julee!!! it is YOU again, you with the raised veggies. God bless you with all your talent. I sometimes work so hard in my gardens that I have to go in and lie down on the floor because I feel the sofa with a towel over it would not support me. I have a garden each for my beloved daughter, her deceased son, her Sailor son (my grandson) and my deceased husband plus my vegetable garden. I have been wanting to make ...»
signs for them. Now I am working on a garden for myself. It will be grand but I want a fountain. What is the big round piece and where did you get it?

Hi Nancy. How wonderful that you have gardens for each of your loved ones both to honor and remember them and so good that you are working on one for yourself. So often us Moms leave ourselves for last. The big round piece is an old millstone that was used for grinding flour back in the day. I found it at a salvage store that usually sells alot of old doors and windows. I only paid $35.00 for it and it was the only one I've ever seen there. I did see some at an outdoor antique place last ...»
weekend and they were smaller and had ridges on them and they were $45.00 each. You could even make one out of concrete like you would a stepping stone. Just make it larger and put some reinforcement wire in it and then use a mold (Like a cup) for the hole. That way you could add embellishments to it like glass beads and such. Hmmmm, just gave myself an idea!

@Julee and Nancy... I love the idea of making our own...and if you want to make it look "old" you can always add concrete stain to the mix PLUS after it's set up paint it with a mix of moss blended in a blender with buttermilk...then use a spray bottle to keep it wet for the first week and after that the moss sould be "rooted" in the crevices enough that it'll stay put even when you put it under water load.... I use this on any new terracotta pots that I buy so they don't stand out from my older ones...LOL

OMG!!! I can see it now. I have a bag of concrete in the garage. I have plywood for the bottom of the mold but what about the sides? I have the edging rolls for garden beds which is flexible and I know about the cup in the middle from Julee. I have the wire left over from the dog pen. Now what is going to hold the flexible to the plywood so I can pour??? Give me another idea on that mold. And I have endless embellishments if I decide to use a couple.

I have every size nail I could put around the flex but now I am thinking, how would I get my "millstone" out of the mold? Pull out the nails and turn it upside down??? Better guide me here. Thanks.

This fountain is going in MY MY MY garden!!! Maybe I need a big Queen B to stick into the ground. Lol.

Nancy...using the flexible edging might be a bit flimsy once the concrete is mixed. you may need to reinforce it with a few wraps of duct tape.
