Reworking the large front plant bed.

The two 50 yr. old Ilex have been in decline for the past 10 years the camphor tree grew, providing more shade than the Ilex liked. Freezes and droughts have taken their toll on other plants as well. Time to rework the bed.

Will these plants bloom with all the shade you've got? Iris needs full sun to bloom and the ginger I have, (white ginger) needs full sun as well, and so do my lillies....You're in Tampa so maybe tehy need more protection than here close to Memphis, but My Irises weren't blooming cause the tree grew up and shaded them and I had to move them to get Blooms....

Sharron W., yes! None of my irises are in full sun and they bloom their heads off during the spring, and intermittently in between. Peacock ginger blooms light, lavender blooms; matter of fact, they're blooming now. Up against the dark, patterned leaves, the blooms really stand out in the filtered light. Passersby always remark about how lovely the peacock ginger is, and I've shared plants with some.

Jan C., thank you. I appreciate your compliment. I've spent most of this week out front working on this bed. It pains me to lose plants, but I knew the choice was either the Ilex (holly) or the camphor tree would have to go, and I chose the Ilex. It had been 8' tall and equally as broad, but it required at least 1/2 day of sun, and the camphor canopy didn't permit that. Planting anything new in this bed requires pruning shears, saws and a trowel, because of the tree roots. I'll be spending all of next week working the rest of that bed.

@Becky H. WOW! that Ginger looks almost like a hosta leaf! I was not at all familiar with that plant but they are beautiful! I'm going to have to do something for my yard since the oak has gotten so large in the front...I may look at finding some of those...BUT I have several other projects before I get that far...wanted to do them before it got so hot, but Hubby's health was an issue since Jan...Now he's doing fine and it's blistering outside...one of the things I needed to do was dig up ...»
and move an Althea...Now it's blooming and HOT and I can't do it until fall...THEN make a new walkway to the front of the house...THEN the plants...

Sharron, a gardner's work is never finished! You keep a list like mine. 8-) I hope "hubby" is doing fine. We never plan to have health issues when we make our lists. It's absolutely not fair about the heat!!

Thank you JP S. I like to play with color in filtered light; otherwise one might never notice they're plants there. I try to work light colors in with dark to allow the plants to display themselve well.
