    It's a tobacco/tomato hornworm. Here's a link http://www.vegedge.umn.edu/vegpest/hornworm.... So sorry they got your plants!

Those are tomato Horn Worms....all you can do is pick them off individually and watch for more...you can sprinkle a little Sevin dust over the plants and that will keep them off for a while but if it rains it'll wash off and you'll need to sprinkle them again. I hate those things....my hubby has to get them off cause they creep me out...if I have to do it...I use tongs...HaHaHa...I can't stand em...

Not sure if it works on these particular worms, but a mixture of dawn dish detergent and water, sprayed over the plants gives them a taste that most insects can't stand, and is environmentally and human/pet safe.

I have used Lemon Joy to spritz the plants but in the real heat of summer sometimes it's too harsh....or maybe I should be putting it on in the evenings so it has time to dry better before the sun comes out...

they start out so small and then before they fall off.. or someone doesn't splat them first.. I hate these dang things. They can get on your tomato vines, maybe at night after you've made your last walk thru for the day.. get up and go outside to your garden.. and there he lays.. all that he can hold.. the little greedy thing.. HE has eaten until he almost has burst open. It takes a constant battle day and night..one night long ago and far away.. I was in bed or was about to lift my ...»
feet up to go to bed and I saw our next door neighbor or someone in his garden down on their knees.. with a flash light. It was our neighbor. We ask him a day or so later. He had gotten down on his knees to look up UNDER, that is where they LOVE to get.. Underneath so that we can't see them. It almost seems like they have learned or GOD taught them to do this.. to MAYBE survive. You know a bird would love this worm.. if it makes it .. it turns into a beautiful butterfly.. it just goes on and on and on.. with life.. for the purpose of being alive.. I do not know where we are suppose to break that eternal life that GOD gives us.. but noone wants to work and slave in a garden to have these ugly worms.. eat up that precious vegetable or fruit.. I guess it's like it's suppose to be.. Live and Let Live !! I see no harm in any of it.. either way.. it's the circle of life.. enjoy it..
