Carved Emu Eggshells

Emu eggshells are smaller than the ostrich eggshells of course. They are also thinner. Not only that, the Emu egg is a deep, dark, emerald green on the outside but beneath that outer shell there are several layers that have different color pigments. Right beneath the dark green is a thin layer of gray. Beneath that a teal color that sometimes is more turquoise than teal and as beautiful as a gem. The last layer in every emu eggshell is snow white and paper thin. To expose this through carving is very difficult. But I used the different layers to carve relief work into the shells. Since I have been asked to show more of my work, here are more photos.

There are breeders with Emu farms mainly in Texas. It's an industry that sells emu oil. Went sort of belly up for a while but I know one breeder that belongs to a co-op in Texas, I get my eggshells from her. I like to order them early in the spring because the first eggs laid are darker in color and smoother than later in the season when the shell becomes lighter and more has a bumpier surface that is harder to carve. Ying and Yang is an egg like that. Almost black.

PS, if you are interested let me know via email. PayPal does no longer inform when there is a purchase. My email address is: cutekelly@eggsquisit.com

I would suggest to get the beginners lesson. It includes even a pattern you can print out and copy.

thanks for the info on emu eggs. I am also curious if you eat the eggs. I remember having an ostrich egg omelette in Africa when I was a kid. I think one egg fed my family.

I get the shells empty and sanitized. I could have eaten ostrich eggs in Africa too. I lived in Johannesburg for 2 years. Saw Capetown and Durban as well as Pretoria. Where in Africa have you been? Wow ... First a Coloradian and now to find out about you having been in Africa. I know one egg will feed a whole family.

That was in South Africa. Johannesburg, I think. I was pretty young. I have also been to Kenya and lived in Egypt when I was an infant, but I don't remember either of those.

This was probably 1982. Family trip. I mostly remember being really disturbed by the segregated water fountains and such, as this was still during apartheid.

Yes so was I I am from Germany and couldn't speak much English at all back then. I tried to board a bus and everyone gestured to me ... no, no, no ... it was a bus for "Black's" only. I noticed the park benches being marked: Europeans, Colored's, Black's ... I hated it. Tried to have my "girl" eat with us at the dining room table. "No Mam, can't do that." To this day I hate to be called "Mam" because it reminds me of the segregation in former SA. Husband was called "Master". ...»

Passes to be in town over night for the African's. We lost our way one day and ended up in Soveto .... and those 12 foot high fences around the "compound" reminded me of a Nazi Prison Camp. I have never seen such poverty in my life than in Soveto.

Had lots of discussions with South African people about the segregation and I was glad to be out of there. I still remember that they tried to stamp Portuguese people as coloreds because of their "brown" skin.

I still don't like to judge people by their color and am surprised as to how much prejudice I have encountered here in the USA. It runs deep, doesn't it?

I have 4 children and 8 grand children and I call them my "Rainbow children". One has a father who is Japanese decent, 2 are American African, one American Native and the rest are are European mud's with Native Indian in there somewhere. ... a set of twin girls in Germany one Spanish looking and one German looking ... so there, I have the whole world in one family and lots of love and I am proud of all of them.

Talked to a Chinese Lady one time and she told me that there is a Chinese saying that states that the world is just one big village. It's so true.

    Wishing you wonderful weekend, Carla

Are the eggs blown out? How do you get the empty eggs?
    on Jun 16, 2012 · Like 0

Yes, they are blown out and sanitized when I get them. I order them from a Lady in Texas who has an emu farm and belongs to a co-op. They are mainly into producing emu oil.

I just noticed that you live in Ouray! That is one of my favorite places in the USA (HOT SPRINGS!!!) and you are so blessed to live there! I can see how the landscape there might inspire you to make such unique art.
