Painting Porcelain Bathroom Fixtures

$6
1-2 Hour
Easy
When the old porcelain fixtures in your bathroom have lost their finish and have become dingy and permanently "stained" here's an easy way to paint them.
Our 1888 house had a bathroom install under the stairs around 1940. The porcelain fixtures, that are cemented into the wall, no longer have a shiny finish which makes them poruous, hard to clean, stained, and very dingy.
You first need to clean and rough up the entire surface of your fixture.
Take some painter's tape and mask off the fixture.
Then, to protect the surrounding area, tape up some newspaper.
Spray lacquer, available at your local hadware store, is amazing. It is easy to use, dries quickly, and if you need to reapply later, it can be removed with acetone (nail polish)
Spray your porcelain fixtures with lacquer, following the manufacturer's directions
Your fixtures will look good as new!

Hi Marilyn, thank you for posting this...wish i would have seen it sooner lol. I have a lovely porcelain TP holder that looked just fine. As I was renovating my bathroom I got an idea to paint the holder-- as there was already so much white in my new bathroom. I tested it by brushing on a light coat of the wall paint (a light gray) thinking that would possibly allow me to spray paint the holder a colonial blue....hoping it would adhere to the brushed on paint. Problem is there are some raised flowers at the top of the holder that i wanted to stay white so i didn't paint over them. Now i feel in over my head and i am afraid to move on and I'm wondering if i shouldnt now try to remove the gray paint and just leave it as it was...if possible. I think i got nervous after seeing a lot of posts saying painting over porcelain never works & that in time it will peal off. Seeing your post is several years old.... how is yours holding up? Do you think i should go for my idea or bail out and try to get the paint off? Thanks so much for any input. btw- I smiled when i saw where you live- i grew up around the Worthington/Powell/Delaware area! GO BUCKS!! Much Love, Pam
